We have just released polling which shows that nearly 70% of Europeans want an immediate boycott
of Russian oil and gas in solidarity with #Ukraine.
Thread 🧵1/
The Guardian reports "It would be possible for Europe to quickly end its reliance on oil and gas from Russia by taking strong measures", citing our report by @mark_lynas@Kaikenhuippu@EnergyJvd .
Europeans overwhelmingly back calls for a massive increase in spending towards low-carbon energy
production in order to find new sources of clean power to replace Russian oil, gas and coal.
4/
Europeans strongly support a suspension of normal planning laws to accelerate the building of
new wind and solar power plants in an effort to stop sending money to Russia.
5/
Our report finds it would be virtually impossible to get rid of Russian oil & gas unless nuclear shut-downs in several European countries are reversed, and currently
shuttered #nuclear plants are restarted.
There is broad support for new nuclear across Europe. 6/
Ask whether the life of nuclear power stations should be extended to help stop sending money to Russia. A clear majority of Germans supported extending the life of nuclear power plants (55% agreed vs 26% disagreed).
European average was 60% agreed and 16% disagreed. 7/
42% of Europeans agree with the need to
reduce demand by temporarily rationing the use of energy.
Support was strongest in Poland (50% support, 25% oppose) and also high in Germany (47% support)
and France (46%).
In all countries tested, environmental group members are net supporters of advanced nuclear energy. In some countries, they support advanced nuclear energy at a higher rate than nonmembers.

Support for advanced nuclear energy is not partisan. In all but two countries in the report, a majority of the supporters of every major political party also support advanced nuclear energy.

Patricia Nanteza (@PatNanteza), Associate Director for Africa, Alliance for Science, on GMOs in Africa.
How can we make sure African countries speak for themselves on the issue of GMOs, and how can we stand up for science across the continent?
The science is clear, keeping nuclear plants operational protects the environment & the economy, something environmental and energy experts have been saying for many years.
Here are 5 reasons why nuclear energy should be included in the EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomy.

Land use is often overlooked but it is a major contributor to climate change and #biodiversity loss.
Reducing our land use footprint means we can #rewild more land, protecting biodiversity & mitigating climate change.
Numerous lifecycle studies have found that #nuclear energy has very low lifecycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
A @UNECE report released last year found it in fact had the lowest average emissions at 5.1gCO2eq/kWh.
