As a regional harm reduction coordinator, it’s been a hard week. FNHA data release of First Nations toxic drug fatalities/events. Gov’t pushback re: decrim and 4.5g vs 2.5g, BC Coroners service data release for Feb. People are dying every day while the govt spins their wheels.
We have the answers. We know what to do. The data doesn’t lie. Our own coroner’s service is pushing for safe supply. People are dying. Every day. The government doesn’t care because if they did, they could have ended this crisis long ago. How many more lives will be lost?
What the government tells us with their inaction is that people who use substances don’t matter. It’s a smoke and mirrors game they play, while 6.2 people die per day in BC. #bcpoli #harmreduction #safesupplyorpeopledie
This isn’t the first toxic drug crisis, but it’s the worst by far. Raising my hands to those who have come before us, who have been doing this work for decades. I’ll never forget doing outreach in the dtes in the late 90’s. We still have a long way to go.
Y’all who know me, know I don’t spend a lot of time pandering to the government and that my beliefs & experiences are rooted in grassroots, boots on the ground action. Who keeps us safe (and alive)? WE KEEP US SAFE (and alive). #harmreduction
I see and love the efforts and work being done in communities all across the province, and in my region, I’m here for it, all of it. We have to hold each other up, break down those barriers, decolonize, and keep doing what we do. No time to waste.
Support your local grassroots harm reduction groups. Support local drug user groups and fundraising efforts. Mutual aid. Communities not cops. Acceptance and love not stigma. Show up and speak up.
