PV from 🇱🇻 replied, saying there was nothing they could do. Polregio 🇵🇱 replied, but we still don't know exactly when they will run the Bialystok-Kaunas train. @RailBaltica replied saying they would keep an eye on everything
But the absolute deafening silence... was from the politicians we contacted
And since writing the letter... the geopolitical situation has worsened. But the only international passenger train on Lithuanian tracks is - the RZD Russian transit train to Kaliningrad!
Lithuania has NO TRAINS to either of its EU neighbours, Latvia or Poland
But it does have a Russian train transiting its territory, even now
Now do I expect Gabriel or Valean to really solve this issue?
No, not really
They're not magicians. They can't force rail firms or national administrations to shift
But they *could* pay lip service to sustainable transport being important. That rail connections are geopolitically important. That the aims of the EU's culture and transport policies ought to line up
But the European Commission, it seems, is incapable even of that
I don't take the excuse that they're too busy. Hell, the officials in @Transport_EU coordinated the #ConnectingEurope express through Lithuania last year - getting out a holding reply at least here would not be hard
And would be better than being berated on Twitter no doubt!
So what is going to happen?
I can see no prospect that 🇱🇻🇱🇹 trains will return. Neither side wants to do it, and 🇱🇻 claims it can't
🇵🇱🇱🇹 won't restart before 31 May *at the earliest*, and then we don't know. Official reason is COVID
Almost *everywhere you look* there are *simple things* you could do to cheaply and easily improve rail connections to bring people together, across borders
But no. Political and rail operations stubbornness 🤷♂️
Lupków 🇵🇱 - Medzilaborce 🇸🇰
It’s less than 20 min trip
Track exists
But they only run trains on Saturdays and Sundays between 25 June and 28 August
🤦♂️
Charleroi 🇧🇪 - Maubeuge 🇫🇷
They run just 2 trains a day, at least all year
But one of those goes at 05:42 in the morning
Oh and these were the first trains SNCB cancelled due to COVID - you’d not rely on this cross border!
Over the past 12 months I have shifted the focus of my advocacy from Brexit to railways in the EU
I’ve built @TrainsForEurope and made some progress demanding the EU sorts out the absence of night trains in Europe
But there are 2 problems
1️⃣ Few people know about the problems of #CrossBorderRail in Europe - there’s little public debate about this
2️⃣ All my railway advocacy has been completely unpaid until now, and I can’t keep doing all of this just in my free time
I don’t know if foreign leaders going to Kyiv is morale boosting or foolhardy
But I do know these leaders went there, in this order as far as I can tell
Gauseda 🇱🇹
Morawiecki 🇵🇱
Fiala 🇨🇿
Janša 🇸🇮
von der Leyen 🇪🇺
Borrell 🇪🇺
Johnson 🇬🇧
So let’s not get carried away, ok?
(There might be others that have visited. If I’ve missed some by all means tell me. The point is - whether good or bad - Johnson going there is *not exceptional*)
The crux: I am going to be producing a hell of a lot of photo and video material on my trip - some of which I am going to need to use on the spot right away (in tweets, live streams), some the same day (blog posts), but most only after the trip is done
