The Shieldbearers of the #RadiantCitadel are the ‘best of the best. Think ‘D&D special forces’. But they’ve got an intentional twist that asks some tough questions and poses added complexities that DMs can utilize and players can build stories from.

#dnd #ttrpg #desidnd
The Shieldbearers are deployed to hot zones, dropped into the worst situations. Their mission is to find & rescue people in danger. Their casualty rates are high; they’re true heroes of the Citadel.

The twist: The rules of engagement state they can only defend if attacked first.
They aren't allowed to impact the area or otherwise go on the offensive.

The leadership of the Citadel is wary of how intervention can cause unforeseen larger problems. Changing natural conditions, even for "good", can have a ripple effect that is unpredictable in its impact.
Getting involved in a war may bring the Citadel into larger conflicts or cause unforeseen challenges both for the locals & the Citadel. The solution may be worse than the problem.

This policy isn't without objections but it's the rules of engagement the Shieldbearers live by.
This gives DMs a new way to spice an encounter.

If Shieldbearer PCs follow the rules of engagement, they will have to wait until attacked and that can certainly increase the challenge rating of an encounter.
There are plenty of ways that a DM can now take what would have been a vanilla encounter and push up the complexities for the players in interesting and scary ways, with very high stakes for the PCs, those they are trying to save, and the Citadel itself.
The tension is palpable--how long will it be before the PCs are attacked while they're trying to save innocents from a terrible and monstrous threat? An enterprising DM can keep their players on pins and needles in a high drama moment.
On the other hand, if the PCs go on the offensive, there can & should be consequences! For example, the Shieldbearer PCs decided to rescue a village from a small raiding band from the neighboring kingdom, and they attack and defeat the band--yes the innocents are saved!
But defeating that small raiding band may now snowball into a huge war or even a retaliatory attack on the Radiant Citadel itself!

A whole campaign could be built out of the consequences of that single choice, the powerful domino effect of breaking the rules.
Normally the DM pulling a big consequence out of something small is frowned upon. But in this case, because the rules of engagement are known upfront, it’s a good way to both craft a story and show how even well-intentioned intervention can worsen a people's predicament.
There’s a lot of real world inspiration for the Shieldbearers, but part of it draws on my own NGO background and my problems with “voluntourism”, where people go to a place to “help” for a couple of weeks with no plan, then leave--their time might have left the place worse off.
It’s a way to turn the usual expectations and tropes of adventuring parties on their head and push them to ask some tough and challenging questions. As the writer, I’m not saying one answer is right or wrong. That’s for your gaming table to decide for yourselves.
And I think that’s part of the real fun, where the real story lies in your game. Whether to follow the rules of engagement or not and what those consequences are for the choices made by a party of Shieldbearers.
Regardless of which choice the PCs make, there are two major tensions and pressures on them: Internal and external.

The internal pressure is the moral choice of these complex rules of engagement and their consequences.

PCs should feel this moral dilemma—it creates lots of RP!
The external is the high stakes of waiting or not to take action!

The dread of knowing the enemy is RIGHT there, while you try and save people from bad things and not knowing if the enemy will attack. OR you attack, and then oh boy—what are the consequences down the road!?
Shieldbearers can also make for awesome NPC Companions! While the Shieldbearers usually travel together in their own special cohorts (parties), there are plenty of reasons why 1 might be solo and team up with the PCs on a quest.
Because of how the Shielbearers function, this gives the DMs a great narrative reason to leave them out of combat or otherwise fade them into the background for a heightened story impact.

There is a lot of versatility for DMs to drop a Shieldbearer into your party.
I hope DMs and players alike will see all the robust possibilities of play with the Shieldbearers, and how this faction can add new dimensions and complexities to your game.

I'm really looking forward to hearing how people use Shieldbearers in their home games and what happened!

Seeing some WEIRD takes about how this is the Democrats' fault.

Know who loves it when liberals eat their own? When progressives don't vote? REPUBLICANS.

That's the way they win.

Here is a quick lesson on how we got here.
In 2010 and 2014, Dems didn't show up in enough numbers to ensure the House and Senate remained in their hands, and we lost both. This radically changed our trajectory, including blocking Merrick Garland from an empty Supreme Court seat for ONE YEAR.
Then in 2016, Dems didn't show up in enough numbers to ensure Hillary Clinton won the presidency, so Trump got to select THREE VERY CONSERVATIVE Supreme Court Justices that changed the entire fate of our nation.

We've now entered a period where a black-robed theocratic council of 5 men and 1 woman of near unlimited power to change the laws of the land and no accountability rules us. Rules our lives. Rules our bodies. Rules our natural surroundings.

Things are grim, but we can change it.
First: We need to ditch purity politics. IMMEDIATELY. We are imperfect, and we need to work with other imperfect people for imperfect compromises. The Republicans learned this decades ago--look who they elected to Congress!

We need to be strategic or we will continue to lose.
Second: We need to expand our hold over the House and get to 51 or 53 or whatever number of Democratic senators will vote to revert the filibuster to a talking one.

Then we need national laws protecting abortion, gun control, environmental protections, etc

Fun throwback to concept pieces for the #RadiantCitadel!

The first is the very first sketch ever drawn of the Radiant Citadel, done by @the_strix while I rambled at her after inspiration hit me while I was in bed reading. We jammed for hours on it.

I have lots of notes from that first conversation--here is a small taste: "This is the central location of [redacted], and it is a place of trade, diplomacy, learning, and mystery. The current occupants don't know where it came from but have occupied it and learned to use it."
"There are 15 mini-floating island-buildings. Each has a single building that is [redacted] corresponds to 1 of the 15 locations. Below the base-level of the central island-city will be a protruding gemstone geode that corresponds to one of the 15 locations."

More seriously, why would a journalist put any effort into reporting at this pay rate? Spending more than 1 hour on the piece (including the initial research/interview/whatever + writing + editing/drafts) makes no sense at this rate. This incentivizes zero work and bad stories.
The only thing even vaguely worth trying at this pay rate would be an off-the-cuff single-draft opinion piece. And god knows, we have ENOUGH zero researched opinion pieces in the ether.
Okay, apparently, they do offer better rates and this thread clarifies.

I'd like to share some thoughts I had on storytelling in Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel and how it might differ a little from other books. This thread should also give some insights into the process of how we made the book.

#RadiantCitadel #DesiDnD
On one side, we have great adventure paths that take you through an entire storyline to a final culmination and Big Bad. There are a lot of great ones and a favorite of mine for 5E is Curse of Strahd. These usually have a tight throughline—they’re like a movie or novel.
On the flip side are adventure anthologies that may share some thematic elements, but aren’t really linked or connected. They may even have been developed at totally different times, like the adventures in Tales of the Yawning Portal. They're a tv series like the Twilight Zone.

Throwback to the 80s. Mom, Dad, my little brother Vivek, my uncle Rajan who passed away last year and who I miss dearly, another uncle from India who I didn't know well, and me and my huge moppy head of curls. Image
I THINK I was wearing the soccer jersey of the team I played on back then. Wow, I totally forgot the team's name until I saw this photo. But it looks like I was either coming back or about to go to a soccer game/practice. My Dad was the coach. And we had an undefeated season.
Much of my tenacity, I learned from my parents. Both, in their own ways, have enormous drive, tenacity, and the ability to endure a lot of hardship. Really, I could say that about a lot of my family. They shaped me.
