What could/will be the implications of a Finnish and Swedish NATO membership ?

Some speculative thoughts from both a Finnish/Nordic and NATO perspective (1/10):
With a very heated debate and the skyrocketing support for joining NATO (from around 20% to almost 70% within 2 months), there are valid concerns in Finland that joining in such a haste might not be ideal as 🇫🇮 has not had time to prepare its own NATO policy. 2/10
However, 🇫🇮 & 🇸🇪 joining NATO will make Nordic defence cooperation (#NORDEFCO*) more straightforward when all Nordics are NATO members.

Finland will naturally closely coordinate its NATO policy with its Nordic partners. 3/10
*NORDEFCO atm: Finland and Sweden EU but not NATO members, Norway and Iceland NATO but not EU members, Denmark member in both but opt-out in EU’s CSDP. 4/10
For Finland, it simply makes sense to join NATO now. If one major reason not to join was maintaining good relations to Russia, that is now obviously history. 5/10
Another argument against NATO in the 2000’s was the US attempts to use NATO as a kind of global “regime change police”. That did not materialise and NATO’s role is going “back to the roots” again due to the necessity to (re-)contain Russia. 6/10
Some voices in 🇫🇮 fear that we’re already too late to the party and NATO will not deliver what we need if (a) Trump(ist) will be elected in the 🇺🇸 in 2024. Add the worst-case scenario of MLP as 🇫🇷 president withdrawing from NATO’s integrated military command structure and 🥶 7/10
With 🇫🇮 & 🇸🇪 in NATO, 1/4 (8 of 32) members would be from the Nordic/Baltic region. Given the rising significance of Baltic Sea security due to Russia’s aggression, it could mark a shift within NATO to a focus on Northern Europe. 8/10
…Especially if Germany can be convinced of the strategic relevance of the Baltic Sea region when #Zeitenwende starts happening and the UK will be integrated more tightly into NORDEFCO, and if 2024 the US and 2027 the latest France will withdraw from the centre of NATO. 9/10
It’s understandable that some people are nervous about the new 1300km long piece of NATO/Russia border. However, although Art. 42.7 TEU is somewhat of a toothless tiger, even without Finland in NATO, other EU ms wouldn’t be able to stay out of it if 🇷🇺 were to attack 🇫🇮. 10/10

Since I got some concerned inquiries regarding the DailyMail report about Russia moving a missile system towards Finland:

Please don’t share it, it was unverified information (also just in general please ignore the DailyMail)

Some more points about this 👇
Russia has been threatening to retaliate if Finland joins NATO for the past 10 years or so. Only this year there have been 3-4 threats of the sort. This is nothing new and to be expected now that Finland is close to applying for NATO membership.
That being said, ofc Ukraine’s destiny has shown that Russia may well follow up on its threats and if it starts building up troops at a neighbouring country’s border, it should not be ignored.

However, Finland has been and is preparing for all eventualities.

Apart from the growing urgency to join NATO, how has Russia’s war in Ukraine affected Finland ? A short thread on some economic aspects
1/6
Before the war, approx 5% of Finnish exports went to Russia. Mostly due to voluntary withdrawals of Finnish businesses from the Russian market since the early weeks of the war, 🇷🇺’s share of Finnish exports has decreased already by 70% compared to one year ago.
2/6
PM Sanna Marin has urged also the rest of Finnish businesses to leave the Russian market. Imagine hearing that from Scholz

There’s also strong pressure from public opinion on the companies still doing business in Russia to cut their ties asap

Scholz’ press conference with Putin has triggered comparisons with the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact on Finnish social media.

I’m sorry Germany but this is where your credit as a partner is currently at in the North
The points that triggered this:
- Scholz failing to mention Finland and Sweden’s right to join NATO when saying that NATO enlargement to the east is not on the table
- not objecting to Putin using the word genocide in the context of Eastern Ukraine
Another point raising concerns: Scholz mentioning having talked with Zelenskyy about implementation of laws regarding special status for Eastern Ukraine, constitutional reform and elections.

Just listened to the ambassadors of 3 citizens’ panels of the #CoFoE in the #ConferenceConversations by @Conf_Observ. A little recap of the pros and cons of the experience so far, according to the ambassadors (thread):
Very realistic expectations of the follow-up process, understanding that given the future-oriented nature of the excercise concrete results can take time. At the same time trust that many politicians will pick up some of the citizens’ recommendations and do their best
Initially some problems to get into a real conversation with the participating politicians; tendency to make statements instead of engaging in a proper debate with the citizens (apparently the politicians have been willing to learn nevertheless)
