I personally totally understand how big #Zeitenwende is for Germans. A lot of broken taboos to digest, i.e. huge increases in defence spending, delivering weapons to a conflict party (and even the Greens support it), Habeck making energy deals in Quatar…
However, many of these things are only big domestically.

Stepping up defence spending is basically just catching up with what Germany was supposed to do anyways as NATO member.

Ukraine is not just any conflict party.

Entirely relying on Russian energy was a mistake, yes.
Most Europeans outside of Germany don’t speak German and don’t understand the peculiar German type of pacifism that includes categorically ignoring security policy implications while also being one of the biggest arms exporters in the world.
I see a lot of Germans very frustrated with the current “Germany bashing”, saying “but Germany is doing what it can, it’s not reasonable to expect us to kill our economy for Ukraine”. “

“No one can seriously doubt Germany’s commitment to help Ukraine”.

Unfortunately, yes.
What other Europeans are trying to do is wake up Germans to realise what is expected of them.

It’s not really an argument to say “other EU ms are hiding behind 🇩🇪’s back on energy embargo”. GER is not just any EU ms. Others may hide behind GER but GER can’t hide behind others
The disappointment is big with Germany’s reluctance to try and find solutions instead of just listing all the things that are not possible (that is a peculiarity of the German state bureaucracy but again, most other Europeans don’t know it).
Off topic but my personal experience with German state bureaucracy is that you need to put substantial pressure on the people in charge (i.e. get angry and shout at them) in order to get things done so trying to bash Germany into doing the right thing is not entirely mistaken…
Long story short: especially because of the grave mistake Germany’s energy dependency on Russia has proven to be, and because it’s so difficult for Germany to get rid of it, 🇩🇪‘s European partners expect more and unambiguous moral leadership and commitment to Ukraine.
P.S. seeing how little damage Marine Le Pen’s ties to Putin did to her presidential campaign is not helping the Franco-German duo. To many EU members right next to Russia, it’s painful and very worrisome to see how inward-looking the biggest EU member states are.

What could/will be the implications of a Finnish and Swedish NATO membership ?

Some speculative thoughts from both a Finnish/Nordic and NATO perspective (1/10):
With a very heated debate and the skyrocketing support for joining NATO (from around 20% to almost 70% within 2 months), there are valid concerns in Finland that joining in such a haste might not be ideal as 🇫🇮 has not had time to prepare its own NATO policy. 2/10
However, 🇫🇮 & 🇸🇪 joining NATO will make Nordic defence cooperation (#NORDEFCO*) more straightforward when all Nordics are NATO members.

Finland will naturally closely coordinate its NATO policy with its Nordic partners. 3/10

Since I got some concerned inquiries regarding the DailyMail report about Russia moving a missile system towards Finland:

Please don’t share it, it was unverified information (also just in general please ignore the DailyMail)

Some more points about this 👇
Russia has been threatening to retaliate if Finland joins NATO for the past 10 years or so. Only this year there have been 3-4 threats of the sort. This is nothing new and to be expected now that Finland is close to applying for NATO membership.
That being said, ofc Ukraine’s destiny has shown that Russia may well follow up on its threats and if it starts building up troops at a neighbouring country’s border, it should not be ignored.

However, Finland has been and is preparing for all eventualities.

Apart from the growing urgency to join NATO, how has Russia’s war in Ukraine affected Finland ? A short thread on some economic aspects
1/6
Before the war, approx 5% of Finnish exports went to Russia. Mostly due to voluntary withdrawals of Finnish businesses from the Russian market since the early weeks of the war, 🇷🇺’s share of Finnish exports has decreased already by 70% compared to one year ago.
2/6
PM Sanna Marin has urged also the rest of Finnish businesses to leave the Russian market. Imagine hearing that from Scholz

There’s also strong pressure from public opinion on the companies still doing business in Russia to cut their ties asap

Scholz’ press conference with Putin has triggered comparisons with the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact on Finnish social media.

I’m sorry Germany but this is where your credit as a partner is currently at in the North
The points that triggered this:
- Scholz failing to mention Finland and Sweden’s right to join NATO when saying that NATO enlargement to the east is not on the table
- not objecting to Putin using the word genocide in the context of Eastern Ukraine
Another point raising concerns: Scholz mentioning having talked with Zelenskyy about implementation of laws regarding special status for Eastern Ukraine, constitutional reform and elections.

Just listened to the ambassadors of 3 citizens’ panels of the #CoFoE in the #ConferenceConversations by @Conf_Observ. A little recap of the pros and cons of the experience so far, according to the ambassadors (thread):
Very realistic expectations of the follow-up process, understanding that given the future-oriented nature of the excercise concrete results can take time. At the same time trust that many politicians will pick up some of the citizens’ recommendations and do their best
Initially some problems to get into a real conversation with the participating politicians; tendency to make statements instead of engaging in a proper debate with the citizens (apparently the politicians have been willing to learn nevertheless)
