Obviously today is Anzac Day, so I was occupied elsewhere, but I was very flattered to see Ross Gittins' article discussing my Housing discussion with the ABC's Andrew West & @BrennanKate on Blue Labor/Red Tory matters.
theage.com.au/business/the-e…
Please listen to the interview here. Both @BrennanKate & I discussed political futures based on solidarity & that recognises our current politics is hopelessly sclerotic & does little to address critical issues, esp housing & intergenerational wealth

I have absolutely NO idea why the main ABC News & @SkyNewsAust do not cover Housing issues. We have had a steadily decreasing % of Australians 40 & under who own property & younger Australians are well behind where their parents were at similar ages. The Pandemic made this worse
Australia is a Federation & our disastrous housing situation has its various culprits at Federal (esp RBA appointees), State (infrastructure & laws around land use), Local (crony NIMBYism). It is now a crisis that seems unfixable absent some revolt at the ballot box or elsewhere
I cannot speak to what people on the Left do but the Right's politics has historically thought it prudent that as many people as possible have a home & a stake in society that they would want to *conserve*. Very hard to have conservatism if people have NOTHING to conserve.
In the 9 years the Coalition has been in power, federally, our Right of centre politics has done almost NOTHING to assist younger Australians to get a home. If only out of electoral self interest, Right politics usually sees more homeowners and mortgagors as politically sensible.
Abbott, Turnbull, now Morrison, have done so little to help the next generation get ahead (doubt Labor would have done any better, either. The Greens would have made everyone poorer etc). The sclerotic & idiotic politics we have - now with faux Independents - is bad made worse.
It is in everyone's interest that prosperity be broadly if not equally shared - that as many people as possible have a stake in the society & something to conserve. Conservatives like Disraeli & Bismarck - no cloth cap working class heroes, these two - got this as #Realpolitik
I worry Australia will be a less stable, pluralistic, country if we do not assure some measure of housing ownership & wealth equity for younger people. Jurisdictions of landlords & renters become Socialist ones. Conservatives need to use the power of law & the state to fix this
Weirdest part of this for me, anyway, is why is it up to me to raise this issue? Why is not every politician being asked what they are doing *right now* to increase the stock of affordable housing? How do you propose to govern a polity where decks are stacked against the young?
Australia has traditionally been a land of hope & 2nd/3rd/4th etc chances for people from all over the world. It has been a place where thrift & hard work could see you get on your way. Now, a decade of QE means no interest on your meagre savings & stagnant living standards.
TL:DR whatever the 2022 election is about, if it is not about Housing & intergenerational wealth disparities, then the election is proceeding fraudulently & our sclerotic politics of insiders & donors will provoke the inevitably brutal electoral reaction. You were warned etc.
To his credit @KosSamaras gets this. More of you need to get this, if only out of self-interest. People without homes, same as people without bread, are primed to revolt. It is why 1 in 3 Australians are voting for minor parties/faux "Independents" etal.

Catholic Archdiocese of Hobart, Tasmania, started "St Joseph Affordable Homes" in 2020 to provide apprenticeship training and to build affordable & social housing - 52 homes completed with 400 to be built. Bravo to Archbishop Porteous & his team

Good wishes to everyone preparing for #AnzacDay tomorrow. It is a day that belongs to all Australians and remembers all those who fought and made sacrifices, in every theatre and on the home front, for our country. #LestWeForget
For #AnzacDay, a tradition is the making of "Anzac Biscuits". The Anzac biscuit is hardy, it is practical, it goes well with any hot brew, esp Tea, and, has become, since the Great War, the sustenance of a free people. Recipes found here

Noting the pile-on of Jason Stanley .... he is wrong on most things & may be irritating etc but there are worse accounts here & he may be going through something, of which we are unaware. Regardless, no one has ever dignified themselves by joining a twitter mob. Caveat.
My general rule for Twitter is you should behave as if the person you are engaging is sitting across from you in a cafe, bar, restaurant, etc, and you aim to at least shake hands or nod amicably when you leave. I am sure I fail at this but it is an aspirational rule.
There are a lot of esp blue chekists here whose entire life's worth is in having you esteem them. Most are clownish. Most deep down know they are clownish. Whether you have to point out their clownishness will depend on the subject at hand & its gravity.

This in @Quillette by @joelkotkin & Wendell Cox on the collapse of housing affordability for people 40 and under & what this means for everything from families, to fertility, to retirements, to political stability, is so good. Read it all.

The ideal of broadly dispersed property ownership was promoted by politicians on both the Right and Left in most high-income countries. “A nation of homeowners, of people who own a real share in their land, is unconquerable,” said President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Today, this faith in self-determination and the democratization of land ownership is being reversed, despite the wishes of the great majority in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Canada.

Well done to the NRL and both teams on such an excellent Anzac commemoration for the Anzac Round - BZ to the @Australian_Navy in support
#NRLTigersSouths
Great to see two traditional clubs squaring off in the #ANZAC round and it being this attacking and competitive. #NRLTigersSouths
Outstanding first half. Tenacious defence and expansive attack. Great stuff. #NRLTigersSouths

Small thread on the Federal ICAC/public integrity body debate, noting that I ranted when it was unfashionable & at some length on @ABCthedrum about political insiders & corruption when a former Defence Minister got a job with a Defence consulting firm.
At the Federal level, corrupt acts and defrauding the Commonwealth etc are already crimes that are investigated by the AFP and, where evidence supports a prosecution, brought to trial. Having a separate 'public integrity' body will not alter this or improve this, per se.
If the issue is former politicians "cashing in" after holding a public office (esp lobbying) then there are straightforward legislative barriers that can be easily erected against former MPs and Senators performing relevant private sector work, consistent with our Constitution.

Anthony Albanese giving a good response on the trans issue - asked about saying he is not woke - he respects every person as they are. Then cuts it off. Albo now to the Right of Matt Kean. The old Left was many things but pretty normal on these issues.
Am a contrarian by nature (have contempt for people too sure of themselves ... you can be somewhat sure...) but I am not sure Albanese is doing as badly as everyone here says. All elections are referenda on incumbents. As John Howard said, you cannot fatten the pig on market day
If you are a Right of centre political party and you have not - in a parliamentary system - ruthlesly expanded home ownership esp among younger demographics in key seats, you run into trouble, electorally. You are relying on your opponent making too many mistakes.
