🧡Whenever I mention the #Covid_19 #pandemic and its death toll, I get replies that say, "Yeah, but what about the cancer deaths?!"

This makes me so unbelievably angry, so

Yea, what about them?!?
I tell you!
2/

Twice in this pandemic the person I love most in this world was diagnosed with cancer.

Twice (on top of the terror you feel anyway) we were terrified whether they'd be able to receive (normally available) treatment.

Once, because the ICUs were filled with Covid patients,
3/

...the next time, because so much staff were ill with it that the university hospital (one of the largest in the country) couldn't guarantee the surgery could take place.

So if you care about cancer patients AT ALL, you wear a mask, get a vaccine & stay out of hospital.
4/

Because the reason patients cannot access the checkups and treatment, is you.

🧡 As it's Sunday, a word about porn. (Which part of this caught your attention?)

During last week's events, I've been wondering about the extent of the (moral) outrage & (dis)honesty as there are regular reports on how prolific & popular (online) porn is.
2/ Some 25% of all internet searches relate to porn, that's 68 million search requests daily. The daily revenue of online porn: €12.6m/day. 8% of all emails contain pornographic material as do 35% of all data transfer on the internet.
3/ 43% of all internet users view pornografic material, 70% of all porn is accessed between 9 & 5 on workdays. The TOP 3 viewing share of worldwide online traffic? Germany 12.4%, Spain 9.5%, UK 8.5%. (netzsieger.de, 2018)

Walls in people's heads are sometimes more durable than walls made of concrete blocks.
- Willy Brandt, Erinnerungen

Not too long ago, we were proud to tear down walls. Real ones and those in people's heads. Getting rid of barriers that confine & obstruct our lives.
2/ Once, I witnessed a wall coming down, (re)uniting my family. For us, this was freedom, and a good thing. For others, this was a threat.

Maybe we underestimated the sense of safety, order, and rule that walls bring. Clear boundaries. The comfort of tribes. Protection.
3/ How else would it be that so many so readily follow the politics of walls, the Trumps and Johnsons? They reinforce the walls in our heads by increasing our sense of insecurity & fear, the desire for safety and a smaller world we feel we can control.

We often judge people's appearance. An ancient instinct designed to assess danger. Still today, it often provides useful information. And sometimes leads us astray. Especially when we apply different standards.
2/4

The problem: The way we assess people's appearance is often clouded by our partiality. We ridicule or interpret clothing, hairstyle, demeanour to confirm what we already think, our opinion, our bias.
3/3

When we say we shouldn't judge women any different from men, then that applies to Ms Raynor *and* Ms Patel. When we say outward appearance says nothing about a person's qualities or abilities, then that applies to all, including Mr Fabricant & Mr Rees-Mogg.

For no reason except maybe his wisdom & humour & insight, I thought I would do a Terry Pratchett quote 🧡 this morning. Actually, that's three very good reasons right there.

Here we go.

Do you think it's possible for an entire nation to be insane?

Terry Pratchett, Monstrous Regiment

Nanny Ogg looked under her bed in case there was a man there. Well, you never knew your luck.

🧡 Civilisation is fragile. Brexit, Trump, the pandemic, now the war. Are people really so easily rallied, manipulated, brutalised? It seems so. It seems hopeless. Until we realise that those who have lost their morality are still the minority.

1/6
A minority that rules us, directly or indirectly, as leaders or loud opposition, assailing the very fabric of our society, aided & abetted by media outlets that shape (or rather: distort) people's view of the world, of what's right.

2/6
There's a German word for it: MitlΓ€ufer. People who don't stop to think, but just follow, even if they're led into the gutter, even if (deep down) they know better. However many they seem, we are more.
