⬆️ We're starting off this thread with that because we know what you're reading on social media right now can seem confusing and chaotic – and that's okay. We want to help.
Here's what we know after last night's news:
The leak of the draft opinion is a DRAFT — which means that it has no legal standing and NOTHING is final until SCOTUS releases an official decision.
‼️Even if the Court does decide to overturn Roe, abortion will NOT suddenly be illegal nationwide.‼️
So, what does that mean?
If #Roe is overturned, many states will maintain or expand abortion access. Unfortunately, however, *13 states* will immediately ban abortion & almost half will severely restrict access.
We don't know why this unprecedented #SupremeCourt leak has occurred.
We don't know what the final opinion will look like.
But we do know that as it is, this draft opinion is horrific. It’s an outright attack on people who need abortion care.
This news is still incredibly shocking and gutting for those of us working in abortion access. But activists have been anticipating the impending fall of Roe for awhile — and we will not let #abortionaccess become a thing of the past, no matter what the Court ultimately decides.
So, you're probably wondering: What do we do now?
We organize. We share resources. We share information. We support young people, especially low income + BIPOC youth, who already face barriers to care & will continue to be the most impacted by the decimation of #abortionaccess.
1️⃣ If you need an abortion visit abortionfinder.org to find the nearest clinic to you.
2️⃣If you’re wondering “how can I help?”, donate to your local abortion fund: abortionfunds.org/funds/
3️⃣ If you're ready to organize, join our network of young people serving as resources for abortion access in their communities through our Youth Abortion Support Collective:
Young New Yorkers hopeful for change go intern @ the Gov.'s office where they fear speaking out.
Young people work for him in entry-level roles where they face sexual harassment + abuse.
So long as Cuomo sees no issue with his behavior, these young ppl are not safe.
Every day Andrew Cuomo remains in power is a statement to abusers on campuses everywhere that you can deny, deflect, and even intimidate your victims into silence to avoid accountability.
Those abusers look to the Governor and see inspiration for further abuse.
