Today allies in the U.S. House introduced the Reproductive Health Travel Fund Act. This crucial legislation will support those who need to travel hundreds of miles for abortion care as access has been decimated across the U.S. following the #SCOTUS decision that overturned #Roe.
Since #Roe fell, six states have made abortion totally illegal and many more have made it virtually inaccessible. People are now forced to travel 100+ miles to access abortion, which increases cost and wait times, and pushes care out of reach for those working to make ends meet.
The people harmed most are those who already face discrimination when accessing health care–particularly Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, young people, women, people in rural areas, individuals in the LGBTQI+ community, immigrants, and people living on lower incomes.

CLAIM: "GOP had 40 year plan to get rid of Roe; Dems had nothing"
FALSE!!!!! #40yearplan #Roe #democrats
Here's how things ACTUALLY happened
Excuse all typos....I'm rushing. I hate seeing a field in which I have expertise butchered on social media. It's repulsive.
First of all, there was no formal 40 year plan that the GOP executed at will. This is absolute nonsense, and people need to retire that argument now. This is not how law operates. There are so many variables that come into play.
Second, the Dems acted much like the GOP -- using Congress, states, local government, and courts to protect choice. And political parties don't act alone. They act with social movement actors and voters--in the US and globally. Abortion advocates and pro-choice judges are Dems.

#BREAKING: We just filed a lawsuit on behalf of the last abortion provider in #NorthDakota seeking to block the state’s trigger ban, which would prohibit nearly all abortions in the state now that #Roe has been overturned.❗The ban is set to take effect on July 28.
If the trigger ban is allowed to go into effect, abortion providers could face a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. #BansOffOurBodies #AbortionIsEssential
Our client in this case, Red River Women’s Clinic, argue in the lawsuit that the trigger ban is unconstitutional under the North Dakota Constitution, which guarantees North Dakotans the rights of life, liberty, safety, and happiness, all of which protect the right to abortion.

On 6/24/2022, when #Roe was overturned, I wrote a letter to those that I do research with. I have been asked to share that broadly. I know others in academia are afraid (for legitimate reasons) to share their voice. I am not unafraid but I have committed to not being silent 1/
the letter:
Friends and colleagues-
I have or am currently working with everyone on this email in various and important ways to advance reproductive & maternal health. In this pursuit & in my role as colleague, mentor, advisor, grant editor, etc, I feel beholden to send this 2/
I apologize for the mass email but I think one of the reasons that we are in this dire situation today is because the collective we are often too silent about those people and processes—‘outside of medicine’—that affect the health of women. 3/

MUST-READ: The fall of Roe didn't happen overnight. It's the result of a decades-long effort by extreme anti-abortion lawmakers to peddle misinformation and pass laws to chip away our rights.

HERE is how Republican lawmakers & judges have been mobilizing for a post-Roe America⬇️
Just hours after SCOTUS overturned Roe, ARKANSAS Attorney General Leslie Rutledge confirmed that abortion is now immediately illegal. AR is one of 13 states with “trigger bans” which will prohibit abortion within 30 days of Roe's fall—several of which took effect the day of.
In five states without trigger laws—Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Ohio, and South Carolina—courts have blocked or struck down recent laws that banned most or all abortions. Without Roe, those laws will probably take effect within weeks or months. (WaPo)

Everything about the overturning of #Roe is important, absolutely. But there seems to be an especially important element missing from the conversation. Let's get into it (a thread that no one asked for) 1/
It's 2022, and #childmarriage is still legal in these United States of America. Yup, that's right, folks. In only 6 states (Delaware, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey) must BOTH PARTIES be at least 18. (2/
As of June 2022, a full 9 states have no minimum age requirement for marriage. Those states are Washington, California, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Michigan, West Virginia, & Massachusetts. (3/

like i said yesterday i get why people are upset about roe or celebrating it, I would hope that people might try to meet in the middle & find some balance

I think that will happen longterm still, but not sure it would be places like Twitter
Most Americans want abortion restrictions for late term, open for the 1rst & are mixed on the 2nd

they hate the idea of abortion but want it to be open for rape & incest

most want a middle policy that isn't advocated for by either side… #abortion
Both left & right say this is Americans being unable to make up their minds,

but I see it as a general libertarian pragmatic attitude,

I think that's fertile ground for real talk & making some sort of middle ground policy in an actual democratic conversation #roevwade #roe

I understand the intense feellings on either side of this issue,

but if the news are telling you that Roe v Wade was settled law or that it would stand forever they are lying to you

Roe had a many rather large weaknesses, & its incredible it lasted as long as it did
Roe v Wade was always fragile,

isn't a rightwing talking point either,

many lefty outlets & journos pointed this out over the years, its a common belief taught in law school & discussed in congress & legislatures across the country

just not something they like to talk about openly…

A Quick Thought Experiment on Roe

I ask that you imagine my story without the protections of Roe.

I was 34 weeks pregnant with my first child. We had just painted the nursery and unpacked the room preparing for her arrival. I noticed she had stopped moving. /2 Image
My daughter was born at 2:32 pm. She was 4lbs 7oz. She never opened her eyes. My daughter was stillborn.

The tragedy I experienced was & still is, unbearable. However, without the protections of Roe & the privacy it granted me, it potentially could have been worse. /3 Image

I’m 37. Roe-and the general legal concept that I should be able to choose if, when and how I have children-has been the standard of my lifetime.

I know it will get even more terrible than it already is-and I can only grasp so much of what that looks like. This is not justice.
Of course, in so many places, this standard wasn’t real for a long time. Reproductive Justice was imaginary or had been steadily eroded by state legislatures, systemic racism and economic inequity for years.

“They’re coming for everything.”

They already have.

1/ Some things have been on my mind that maybe we need to try to remember and think about at this fulcrum moment in the #abortion debate.

Since I wrote my book several years ago & re-read #Roe for the 1st time in years, I've been wondering abt something.…
2/ #Roe, let's remember, divided pregnancy into trimesters. #Abortion was more or less unrestricted in the 1st 12wks, practically prohibited in the last 12wks. Interests of mother & child were balanced this way.

This amts to a legal recognition of personhood.
3/ The only sensible reading of the #Roe scheme is as a balancing of the interests of 2 persons that are in conflict.

This is a glass-half-full reading. But the casual way we talk abt Roe as a total loss is not constitutionally realistic or accurate.

Short 🧵
A few facts about #Roe that are getting lost:
1. Court decisions are not-and should not be—decided on the basis of what “most people want.” They are based on what does and does not constitute sound law. (1)
2, if Roe is overturned it will neither “end” nor “outlaw” abortion in the United States. It will simply shift the question of legality back to state legislatures. The question of Roe is not “should abortion be legal” but “who should decide if abortion should be legal?” (2)
3. Many of the passionate arguments made on both sides of this issue are presently moot, and will remain so until/unless Roe is overturned. Put another way, it’s the removal of Roe alone that makes our arguments mean anything at all. (3)

This morning I preached on the #lectionary passage from Acts, which tells the story of the healing of Tabitha, who is also known as Dorcas. I wrote the sermon in the shadow of the overturning of #Roe. A 🧵 #prochoice
Tabitha was one of few women called a disciple in the Bible. She was noted as someone who did many good works. She fell sick & died. The “widows”, other women who were her friends, surrounded her in death and grieved. Then, knowing she followed Jesus, they called Peter. 2/?
It was the very early days of the church, and Peter was the de facto leader. So he was, for all intents and purposes, charged with responding on behalf of the church. He came to the room where Tabitha lay dead. 3/?

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was Right: Roe v. Wade was always destined for the Scrap Heap🗑️… @benshapiro @AbbyJohnson @madelineorr #conservative #elonmusk #abortion #prochoice #roe #RoeVWade #RoeOverturned
May be hard for my friends on the left to hear this,

our whole lives we've been told how important Roe v Wade was in giving women the right to abortion via a right to privacy

But this was fiction, the only question for Roe v. Wade was when it would be overturned, not if.
whatever ur opinion on abortion,

Roe v Wade was objectively bad law built upon the weakest case constitutionally

As RBG predicted,
Roe was always eventually going to be overturned… #politics #RoeVWade @CathyYoung63 @MrAndyNgo @ConceptualJames @amber_athey

1/ Reflecting a while on the #scotusleak, I have a few thoughts for #Catholics about what we lose with the overturning of #RoeVWade.

FIRST While #abortions will continue after #Dobbs, the defense of life will be built precariously on the shaky ground of results-oriented judging.
2/ This reversal of #Roe will be a narrow decision, there will be a lot in a concurrence and dissents for future courts to lean on. And, we all know this will not settle the #abortion question. So the victory here will be rather hollow legally & politically.
3/ Indeed, I would say *forcing* this decision in this way (Garland/Gorsuch, ignoring Kavanaugh's misdeeds, ACB) discredits the cause of life b/c it could not (apparently) be accomplished by persuasion & a political process.

#Catholics concerned for life should worry abt that.
