Just watched this, it's only 40 minutes long and can be watched on Netflix. It's a beautifully directed film set in Namibia. Highly recomend watching!
The film covers some interesting points such as; the distinction between owning the land or being apart of the lands natural rhythm.
Before Europeans dominated Africa tribes hunted in small amounts for food on the land they shared with 'Giants'. A sustainable lifestyle.
Once Europeans arrived they shared there mentality with the people of Africa. More for more money an different and unsustainable lifestyle.
Now we see crime syndicates poaching the animals we doomed with our presence and mindset.
Now the Europeans are trying to fix this issue, but once ivory and other parts of endangered species was in demand and worth a lot of money. A chain of unbreakable issues was forged.
In the movie Khata is introduced as a 'man of the house' type figure who goes out and works long hours. Until he fall upon the opertunity to make more money and change his situation. All he had to do is get his hands dirty. He became a poacher for independent need.
The aim of the movie is to change the mindset of people towards poachers. From heartless to choiceless.
However sometimes I don't think its that simple. Not all poachers are kind hearted like Khata is in the movie. That is the crippling reality.
Today we have around 150 demoseticated reindeer within the Cairngorms. Reintroduced in 1952 by Mikel Utsi from Sweden.
He found that reindeer thrive within scotland extremely well and the climate and temperatures match their needs. They also bring in tourists during winter.
Reindeer like most species in the UK were hunted to extinction, because we keep proving that we cant look after what we have, sustainably. Even still polititains are relucatant to invest in rebuidling an Ecological Utopia by reintoducing old species and rewilding dead landscapes.
Humans are responsible for most mammalian extinctions for the past 125,000 years. That's an insane amount of time!
The rate at which mammals are going extinct is also going up as we humans continue to change the climate. Polar bears for example, losing their habitat due to the melting ice caps, which we have been causing since the industrial revolution. Also rainforest are being cut down.
Lovely to see that humans can find solutions to such big issues! This is what we need to see more of all over the world. So we can co-exist with the space we have.
This method, while 'expensive' actually works out cheaper. It significantly reduces the cost to clear collisions. It reduces the risk of injury or death and sustains a population of the wildlife that may attract tourists. It works!
This is christmas island, a place where the Christmas Island Red Crab inhabits. Due to human interaction with the island an invasive species (crazy ant) now thrives here eating away at the crabs during mating seasons during treacherous migrations, slimming the population.
