This week I’ve heard from 3,500+ constituents who are outraged that millions of Americans are poised to lose control of their own bodies after nearly 50 years.
82% of them said loud + clear: Congress must pass a bill to protect #RoevWade.
I was moved that so many Mainers shared stories about their own abortions, complicated pregnancies, and miscarriages. Like Cathie from @CityPortland.
Their stories are no one’s business, but they felt compelled to speak up b/c abortion is health care, not a political football.
While we are fortunate to have a Governor who has pledged to uphold abortion access in Maine, our reproductive rights should not be at risk every election year. #PassWHPA
Beyond what the Supreme Court decides in the coming weeks, Republican-led states are already creating horrific laws that would jail women for obtaining abortion care.
We are seeing a nationwide assault on our personal liberty and that’s why @HouseDemocrats passed the Women’s Health Protection Act last September, despite every single House Republican voting against it.
I surveyed thousands of my constituents to share their opinions about abortion access and concerns regarding news that the Supreme Court is poised to overturn #RoevWade after nearly 50 years.
The results are overwhelming, but not surprising. #mepolitics
Public trust in the Supreme Court is already at a historic low, and this term has cemented the current Court’s place as one of the most partisan and extreme benches we’ve ever seen.
🧵
This is the Supreme Court that overturned 50 years of precedent protecting reproductive rights, struck down affirmative action, and stripped significant rulemaking authority from federal agencies to further empower the Judicial Branch.
Now, by expanding a President’s immunity from prosecution for so-called ‘official acts’, the Court has undermined the foundation of our Constitution that no man is above the law.
The #BuildBackBetter Act is a blueprint to rebuild our nation for the next century. Our plan fulfills the urgency Americans rightfully demand of their government.
For decades many of the biggest challenges facing our nation have been put on the back burner: child care affordability, a stronger safety net for aging Americans and people with disabilities, and our hazardous dependence on fossil fuels, to name a few.
.@POTUS ran on a platform to reform these failed policies. That he won more votes than any candidate in our history was a strong endorsement of these promises. Amid a pandemic & economic crisis, Americans elected a unified Democratic gov't to solve our most perplexing problems.
As a parent and grandparent, I am grieving today for the 17 families who lost loved ones in the #Parkland school tragedy and for the survivors who will be forever haunted by what they lived through. 1/7 #mepolitics
I’m ashamed to be in a Congress that continues to sit on its hands while these tragedies and our constituents demand swift action. 2/7 #mepolitics
It’s not for lack of trying on the part of Democrats, who have offered sensible legislation to stem the flow of weapons into the hands of those who would use them to slaughter members of our communities. 3/7
