Keeladi, a Sangam-era site, was first excavated in 2014. The 8th phase undertaken by the State Department of Archaeology began in February 2022

One of the first to be unearthed is a rectangular-shaped dice measuring 4.5 cm made of ivory. The ASI and TNSDA had recovered cubical dice made of ivory and terracotta in the past.
This was the first time TNSDA stumbled upon a rectangular dice after it took over in 2017
Another important finding this season is an intricately designed female figurine made of terracotta. The ASI had also recovered similar figurines.
In Konthagai, part of the Keeladi cluster, archaeologists continue to find burial urns. Konthagai is likely to be the burial site of the inhabitants of Keeladi -- the distance between the habitation site (Keeladi) and Konthagai is just 750 metres diagonally.
The excavation is in the third phase in Konthagai. In the past one month, 20 urns were found in two large trenches that have been dug. The site yielded 47 urns and 31 urns in the first and second phase conducted in 2020 and 2021.
Bones, tooth, skull, petrous and other parts of a human skull, paddy husk found in burial urns and sediments of offering vessels found at burial sites are being subjected to various analyses and studies at the DNA lab being established in Madurai Kamaraj University.
Archaeologists continue to get beads made of different materials reinforcing their belief that the urban settlement that existed on the banks of River Vaigai had vibrant industries.
Over 15,500 artefacts were recovered in the first seven phases of excavation. These will be showcased at the grand museum being built in Keeladi, 12 km from Madurai, on the highway connecting the Temple City with Rameswaram.
The museum is likely to be a hit among tourists. Already people flock to Keeladi to take a look at the excavation site. The state-of-the-art museum is in the final stages of construction.
#Keeladi — the Sangam Era archaeological site, where excavations began for the first time in 2014, continues to throw surprises with a rich cache of artifacts, including an ivory rectangular dice and a female figurine made of terracotta, being unearthed
The sixth display hall -- the largest, and Kal Mandapam (stone hall) which will also couple up as an open-air theatre to be used for hosting events.
Just 12 km southeast of Madurai, Keeladi is located in Sivaganga district which is home to the Chettinad region of the state, and hence government decided to build the museum in conventional style.
The excavations in Keeladi have created a huge buzz as carbon dating of artefacts found in the 4th phase show they belong to 600 BCE, pushing the Sangam Era behind by three centuries than it was thought & making it contemporaneous with Gangetic Plains Civilization of north India
#Thread : On the suburban train to #Chengalpattu , a group of students boarded the train at Tambaram. They were unruly. They deboarded the train at every stop and boarded again once the train began to move.
At Guduvanchery, I believe, one of the students could not board the train again. He was literally hanging, clutching onto the window pane. After much difficulty, the students and other train passengers pulled the guy to safety. The terrified student came and sat on a seat.
Others came and dragged him to the gate. Advice from the train passengers not to stand near the door and avoid travelling on foot board was ignored. I couldn't see fear in the eyes of any of the students except the one who got stuck. They behaved as if nothing happened.
Two weeks ago, Ashwini, who belongs to the Narikurava community, was denied dignity after being disallowed to have food with others during annadhanam at a temple.
A YouTube channel aired her interview which went viral.

A week later, HR & CE Minister @PKSekarbabu invited Ashwini to have lunch with her at the very temple where her dignity was questioned.
In fact, the woman was seated between the minister and the HR & CE Commissioner which sent a very strong message.

Tomorrow (November 4), Chief Minister @mkstalin will drive to the hamlet where Ashwini and her community members live in Mamallapuram to hand over land pattas to them.
Amidst uproar in the House by AIADMK members, Thiaga Rajan begins his speech by quoting a couplet from Thirukkural. He invokes social reformer E V R Periyar and #DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi.

Marriage season in #TamilNadu has begun, and if people do not confine it to a very close family event, there are possibilities that weddings emerge as super spreaders. The situation could be alarming in rural areas. (1/n)
Government has put a cap on the number of people for marriage, but that is not followed in many places. In villages, marriages are held at the homes of either the bride or the groom. They are normally closed spaces. And neither social distancing nor masking is followed. (2/n)
Some 100 people will easily gather in a house for the wedding. And in villages, food will be served in houses that are close to the venue. The spread will be rapid of proper measures are not taken. Many people are shifting weddings to their residences from marriage halls (3/n)
Priority is to save lives. Do not waste crucial time in looking for a bed at a private hospital. Yes, the government hospitals may not offer the luxury that their counterparts run by private sector possess. (2/n)
But the treatment is very good in Govt. Hospitals (three of my close relatives who were critical recovered at some of these facilities) And the government has enough stock of Remdesivir and other drugs for now. (3/n)
