Critically important new PNAS opinion piece by @JeffDSachs & Neil Harrison calls “on US government scientific agencies, most notably the @NIH, to support a full, independent, and transparent investigation of the origins of #SARSCoV2.” 1/13 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
Although no new evidence presented, Sachs and Harrison state what should now be obvious to all: 1) we still don’t know #COVID19 origin, 2) we must if we are to build a safer future, 3) China blocking & 4) we must do our best to investigate regardless. 2/13
While it’s true that “much could be learned by investigating US-supported & US-based work that was underway in collaboration with Wuhan-based institutions,” we can’t lose sight of China’s criminal coverup. I've been saying this for a very long time. 3/13 wsj.com/articles/how-t…
Here at home, we must demand more transparency from NIH. FOIA’d emails (per Sachs/Harrison and many others) “suggest that the NIH leadership took an early and active role in promoting the 'zoonotic hypothesis' and the rejection of the laboratory-associated hypothesis.” 4/13
The fact that a luminary like Sachs, who chairs @TheLancet #COVID19 commission, is writing this is a HUGE deal. It's a direct refutation of the "dispositive evidence" claims by the "market origins" preprint authors, wrongly amplified by the @nytimes. 5/13 nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Sachs argues the investigation “should take place w/in a tightly focused science-based bipartisan Congressional inquiry with full investigative powers, which would be able to ask important questions—but avoid misguided witch-hunts governed more by politics than by science.” 6/13
I've been making the case for a bipartisan US national commission for two years. It's just nuts we don't yet have one in place. 7/13 thehill.com/opinion/white-…
But the real question for all of us is why we need to repeat these calls to arms over and over while nothing much happens? How can it possibly be that after 2.5 years and 15 million dead there is no full investigation? 8/13
@WHO SAGO is an important step in the right direction but seems trapped between China's unwillingness to cooperate and its inability to fully condemn China for this coverup. 9/13
Our so-called "Paris group" of experts has released five open letters making the essential points. You can find links to them here. 10/13 jamiemetzl.com/origins-of-sar…
It was a big deal when @jbloom_lab @DavidRelman @Ayjchan @Baric_Lab & others released their Science letter, but then... crickets. Baric is the world's expert on coronaviruses who knows more than anyone what might have been happening at WIV. 11/13 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
So what is it going to take to get a full investigation of pandemic origins? Are we just waiting around for the next pandemic that doesn't kill (unnecessarily) 15 million and counting but 50 million, a hundred million, a billion? 12/13
So many shots have been fired across the bow that the water is boiling around us, yet our oblivious ship sails on toward even greater danger. Unless we take urgent action now, future generations will blame us, fairly, for our inaction. 13/13

We all remain at unnecessary risk until we determine how the #COVID19 pandemic began and address our greatest vulnerabilities. Any serious investigation of this issue must address the following 23 questions.
1: Why did the Chinese government either not carry out a full contact tracing to find the #COVID19 index case or do so and not share the results?
2: Why did the Chinese government in January 2020 knowingly lie to the @WHO about human transmission of the #SARSCoV2 virus then prevent WHO experts from travelling to Wuhan for nearly three weeks?

The @nytimes reported, inaccurately in my view, that two recent preprints establish the Huanan market as the location of the first #SARSCoV2 human infection. I invite @MichaelWorobey & the other authors to answer the following questions re their claims. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Question 1: What is the relationship between people working in and living near the Huanan market and how do you distinguish between them in your analysis? Presumably, some people work in the market but live far away.
Question 2: How do you account for the discrepancy between the phylogenetic data suggesting an initial outbreak in late October or early November 2019 and the #COVID19 infections from December you discuss in your papers?

The late Phillip Russell, former president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, was a big deal. That's why I encourage everyone to read carefully the email he sent in April 2020. 1/11 usrtk.org/biohazards/bio…
"The flimsiness of the epidemiology pointing to the wet market, the absence of bats in the market, the failure to identify an intermediate animal host, the extraordinary measures taken by the Chinese gov't, including persecution & probable killing of two brave physicians... 2/11
... to cover up the outbreak, the steps taken to silence the laboratory personnel,. the change in leadership of the lab, all point to the lab as the source of the outbreak.” 3/11

Last August, I called for the establishment of a bipartisan US national #COVID19 commission in my @thehill editorial. Delighted that @SenFeinstein @RogerMarshallMD @SenGillibrand & @SenJoniErnst today introduced a draft Senate bill mandating just that. thehill.com/opinion/white-…
Understanding what went wrong and addressing the many shortcomings on many levels in the US and globally is key to building a safer future for all. Establishing a bipartisan US national #COVID19 commission has an important role to play in that process. feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.c…
Per @RogerMarshallMD: "As a physician, we always need to know the what, where, how, and why when giving a diagnosis. For this reason, it couldn’t be more important that we determine the origins of this infectious disease outbreak to ensure nothing like this ever happens again."

It seems highly questionable that the sequences found by @jbloom_lab, which would likely have suggested the wet market origin story was wrong, were deleted just when the Chinese gov’t was actively peddling an outbreak story they very likely knew was false. nytimes.com/2021/06/23/sci…
It’s equally outrageous that int'l experts can’t even speak w/ the scientists who did this work & that journalists from countries where so many have died from this totally avoidable catastrophe can’t ask Chinese scientists the most basic questions about their work & actions.
A brave Chinese scientist, Botao Xiao, released a preprint in Feb '20 considering a possible #COVID19 lab origin. His paper was withdrawn and int’l media & experts have no access to him & most other Chinese scientists w/ relevant info. This is outrageous. chanworld.org/wp-content/upl…

Although I welcome the @G7 statement yesterday calling for a "timely, transparent, expert-led, & science-based @WHO-convened Phase 2 #COVID19 Origins study including… in China,” this will only be meaningful if it leads to a comprehensive investigation into what went wrong.
Fully investigating & understanding pandemic origins isn’t about politics, it’s about identifying our biggest failures so we can fix them. Unfortunately, #China has been engaged in a massive coverup since the very beginning. You can learn more here. jamiemetzl.com/origins-of-sar…
.@DrTedros was 100% correct telling @G7 leaders that "the respect” the families of people who’ve died from #COVID19 “deserve is knowing what the origin of this virus is, so we can prevent it from happening again." The safety of everyone & future generations depends on this.
