(1/11) @vyperlang is a great language for writing smart contracts. Vyper is a Python-inspired #EVM programming language w/ a primary focus on creating readable smart contracts & enforcing advanced security invariants. A thread 🧵 🪡 on why builders should explore using #Vyper.
(2/11) A little bit of history 📜: Before Vyper, there was a language called Serpent. Vyper started out as basically Serpent but better. According to @VitalikButerin , Vyper quickly became the successor of Serpent because serpent was “outdated tech.”
(3/11) Vyper is an elegant 👗, lightweight, Python-derived language that compiles to EVM bytecode. One of its main goals is #auditability. The language should be very readable for security professionals 🔐and researchers📊 who are very familiar with Python.
(4/11) There are many benefits to #Vyper’s approach to smart contracts, as it includes more restrictions and features out of the box 📦 meant to keep smart contracts safer. Surprisingly, even restrictions can sometimes be beneficial!
(5/11) For example, Vyper’s implementation of dynamic arrays allows statically allocating memory in advance, because maximum sizes are known. This allows Vyper dynamic arrays to be resized dynamically, something other languages can’t do!
(6/11) Another example 🛠 is that #Vyper doesn’t allow you to write assembly directly in the code. This might seem like a harsh restriction but it allows the Vyper optimizer to optimize code more heavily without worrying about advanced assembly breaking those optimizations.
(7/11) Vyper is getting better w/ every release. The last release, v0.3.3, added support for all of #Solidity’s ABI types that the language includes. This was one of the remaining technical shortcomings, meaning Vyper is a viable alternative for smart contract development
(8/11) However, the area developers mention most is the lack of resources for Vyper development. Since Vyper is a newer language, and has really only seen major use in more advanced #DeFi applications, like Curve & Yearn, there have never been very many resources to learn Vyper.
(9/11) Coming June 1st, we are launching #ApeAcademy, an online community for learning smart contract development from the pros. We decided to focus 100% of our new content on using Vyper, with high-quality videos and in-depth tutorials showing how to build #Web3 projects.
(10/11) Further, using our new Ape Template plugin, we’ve built out highly configurable Vyper template projects complete w/ scripts & tests for many common configurations of production tokens, #NFTs, etc. These templates will get your new projects up & running faster than ever!
(11/11) If you want more resources on @vyperlang today, we recommend checking out “Vyper by Example” in their documentation: vyper.readthedocs.io/en/stable/vype…
