10 years ago today Theresa May first used the term 'hostile environment' to describe her punitive new immigration system plans. She set out to make life unliveable for people who couldn't 'prove' their right to be here. The results have been devastating..🧵theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/m…
4 years after HE policies were introduced, it emerged that govt had devastated the lives of many Windrush generation members.
At least 83 members of the Windrush gen were deported, many more were detained, at least 23 have now died without compensation.
theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/m…
But the devastating effects of these policies stretch far beyond Windrush-they've made life hellish for so many who call Britain home.
Like Sarah - who came here age 2 but who govt pushed into limbo & robbed of rights due to an error on an immigration form.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/m…
We talk to clients every week, who've been here for over a decade, who've built their lives & families here, who are loved by their communities.

But govt's staggeringly costly & complex visa rules push them out of status & force them to live in fear.
independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
Even when you have status, this govt often forces you to live in fear. Many on the 10 year route have to pay over £2500 in visa fees every 2.5 years.

People wait months to hear back from the Home Office on visa renewals - & delays are only getting worse.
itv.com/news/2022-05-2…
Govt have hiked visa fees by hundreds of £s in last decade. A family of 4 will often pay £50k over 10 yrs for the right to stay. And during this time families often have NRPF, so no safety net.

Govt is basically pushing many families into debt, poverty & the hostile environment. Image
People who are part of our communities - who've made the UK home should be able to build fruitful lives here.

Instead this govt deems people temporary for years, imposes stupidly high visa fees & a maze-like visa system & then robs people of their dreams, rights and dignity.
It doesn't have to be this way. For the past 10 years, people have been fighting back and building communities of welcome instead.🎪We're coming together to celebrate this & host @AntiRaids/ know your rights workshops on 19 June. Join us 👇🏽

While Downing Street partied, low-paid staff were forced into unsafe workplaces across the country.

The Government's Hostile Environment is a key factor, leaving workers without protections, sick pay, or the ability to say no to dangerous work

Emanuel Gomes died after contracting COVID while cleaning offices that sat empty at the Ministry of Justice.

His employer, an agency contracted by MOJ, offered no sick pay. Getting ill would leave only SSP at the unliveable rate of £96.35 a week.

We deserved to be safe in the pandemic.

But Government policies cut migrants off from basic rights and protections, leaving them vulnerable to dangerous working conditions.

This is the Hostile Environment at work.

🚨 Our NEW report out today with @publiclawcentre shows how Home Office actions put migrants’ lives at risk during the pandemic

jcwi.org.uk/unequal-impact…

The report, “Unequal Impacts”, raises huge concerns, including: 🧵
1/7
🏡 The Home Office prioritised its Hostile Environment instead of making sure that all of us were able access housing, healthcare, isolate effectively and access the state safety net.

2/7
🛑 The Home Office carried out enforcement measures including raids and detention even at the height of the pandemic, failing to prioritise public health

🚨TODAY, MPs are voting on the Nationality & Borders Bill - also rightly known as the #AntiRefugeeBill - after peers made changes to it in the House of Lords.

👇🏽Here are some of the key changes MPs will consider and how we get them to scrap the #AntiRefugeeBill:
Lords voted ❌ to “offshore” camps for people seeking refuge here. This would mean deportation and indefinite detention in remote, hidden camps for almost all refugees.

⚠️ Today MPs could vote offshore asylum camps back in. #StopNABB
Lords voted ❌ to criminalising refugees for simply *arriving* in the UK. Every refugee who reaches us would, under this law, be subject to up to 4 years in prison.

⚠️ Today, MPs could vote criminalisation of refugees back in. #StopNABB

🚨We’re going to court!

The EU Settled Status scheme deadline is looming. Tens of thousands of vulnerable people face being criminalised overnight.

The Home Office must #ScrapTheDeadline & ensure no one loses status. Please chip in crowdjustice.com/case/dont-crim…

Our case [thread]
2/ The deadline on the EU Settled Status scheme is a cliff edge. Overnight, tens of thousands of people could be criminalised just for living their lives and will face the full horrors of the hostile environment. #ScrapTheDeadline
3/ People who are already vulnerable are at highest risk of getting left out. The risks are well documented. E.g. This paper by @MigObs explains how victims of abuse and exploitation, and people who are isolated are at highest risk: migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/repo…

*BREAKING*

The Court of Appeal confirms that the Government’s Right to Rent scheme, which forces landlords to carry out immigration checks, causes racial discrimination.

But judges stopped short of declaring it unlawful. So where do we go from here? [Thread]
[2/5] The Court of Appeal found, like the High Court last year, that the scheme increases racial discrimination in the rental market.

It takes BME people and migrants twice as long to find a home to rent as a white person with a British passport. Image
[3/5] That’s because Right to Rent turns landlords into border guards and incentivises discrimination.

Huge fines for renting a home to someone without the right papers, but virtual impunity for quietly passing over people of colour + migrants in favour of white British people.
