Given that cowardly so-called LEOs have waited outside a school massacre twice in the past 5 years (AFAIK), here is an idea:

Along with multiple other things, a school & it's parents could carefully design a system where parents & other adults who give a damn provide security.
I know it sounds extreme but we are in an extreme situation right now, and all lawful/ethical options must be considered on their merits or otherwise.

Meaningfully improving mental health care, making it harder to obtain guns, and hardening the target are all vital steps.
This thread is about just one of those steps: hardening the target.

Many schools have armed LEOs or other persons on site. IMO that is necessary but (evidently) not sufficient.

Having a parental team would be difficult, I know...
But IMO it's an idea worth exploring. I do support the right of responsible gun users to own and use them, according to the law. I do believe the Constitution allows for some limits to be placed on these rights. And, further amending it is NOT impossible, in time.
If the majority of voters (who are pro-democracy and pro- the rule of law) can defeat enough Republicans at all levels of government, Constitutional amendments become possible. It will take years, though.

Meantime, parents are braver than these wannabe LEOs.
I can see how such a system could go wrong, but that is no reason to preclude it at first glance.

We protect other places with adequate fencing, monitoring, alarms, emergency shelters, and crucially: adequate armed personnel who are willing to act. Why not schools too?
If I had a child I would not want them attending a school that had not hardened itself as a target.

I don't think teachers are the right people to be armed. I think parents and others, are.

Yes, many parents have to work, but it could still be done.
Quite apart from security measures, a school is most effective educationally when it's strongly engaged with it's community of parents, other caregivers & family, health & social service professionals, & frankly everyone living nearby.

Citizens already have the power to help.
Americans cannot afford to wait for politicians to help fix this problem through law changes. Even if enough of them were willing, it would still take years to see a positive impact at your local schools and other public places.

You already have the power and the right to act.
The pandemic was the catalyst for social and economic regress around the world, including in the USA.

It's a hard time to try to get healthcare workers, law enforcement agencies, and civil servants to improve their competence levels and performance outcomes...
Pre-pandemic, the services for children and young people experiencing mental illness or even behaviors of concern were inadequate, almost everywhere in the US.

Good luck relying on them now.

The quickest win would be to harden the targets better.
Adequate perimeter fencing is costly to build & maintain. But what is the alternative? Get used to massacres of 6 year olds increasingly occurring?

Layers of protection are needed, from the perimeter all the way into the classroom. Don't like the look and feel of that? Tough.
Along with the protection of physical barriers & other equipment & design decisions, operational protections are needed. This means boots/shoes on the ground.

Government funding will be needed to ensure such programs are effectively run & don't just worsen the safety problem.
The rationale for doing all this is simple. The value of a human life is priceless. And these massacres have ripple events far beyond the families of the murdered children and adults. They are fucking everything up for the USA, esp. during the current crisis of democracy.
Law abiding, mentally healthy adults need effective firearms for self defense & the defense of vulnerable others.

Any country needs to have reasonable safety offered at public schools.

These problems CAN be solved.

It is imperative to #VoteBlueToSaveAmerica this year.

As a 5-year veteran of Atlantic hurricane watching, I believe the message in this video is vital for EVERY American.

For both natural & human-made reasons, the 2022 season will be worse than normal.

EVERYWHERE in the US.

#PrepareNOW
#HWStormWatch

The disaster readiness messages in the above video are pertinent to people anywhere in the world, too.

There are always people who don't prepare well enough, often because they don't realize how severely a natural disaster can affect them. They rely on others to save them.
This is not a good idea anytime, but especially in the US right now.

We do have a responsibility to think of and offer help to our neighbors as best we can.

"You are your own first responder."

Obama attracted a lot of neo fascist hate for daring to hold two major events in his mind at the same time. The fact is, there are white supremacist Republican crimes against humanity happening so often now that if we only mentioned one per day, we wouldn't keep up.
And because some will no doubt attack me as if I said racism was a major factor in Uvalde, I didn't. It sure was a major factor in Buffalo, mind you.

The death of George Floyd set off a consciousness-raising trend around the world. I finally figured out some stuff:
I figured out why we need to keep pointing out that #BlackLivesMatter.

It's a big topic that stretches back to long before 1776. Contemporary racism in America's institutions and in many police departments is having a disproportionate impact on the lives of all people of color.

Historically, both Rs & Ds contributed to this state of affairs. Neither greed nor price gouging are the problem. Federal agencies had the ability & duty to monitor & inform the admin early.

The risk to baby formula supply should have been acted on IN FEBRUARY 2022, not in May.
As soon as the FDA acted on the issues with Abbott (a major manufacturer) in February, the appropriate channels between agencies and ultimately up to the WH should have been alerted. I don't know if they were, or how. But I do know that:
The future supply of any kind of "essential" product whether food, water, medicines, or supplies like PPE for example, is meant to be monitored by relevant federal agencies, and any national-level impacts like the baby formula shortage are meant to be reported to WH staff.

Same. Even if I wasn't a survivor of domestic violence (more than once) I'd still be capable of easily seeing that #AmberHeardIsAnAbuser.

Her behavior actually triggers many DV survivors. I can only watch her in small doses. Folk have got to stop with their sexist lens.

1/x
I find it so cringeworthy that many people still view DV in a sexist way, where male abusers and female targets are the norm and they can't (won't) get their heads around any other gender combination. It's sick. Stop it.
And while I'm at it, stop calling us victims. We are survivors. IMO, the term victim applies only to those who were killed by their abuser(s).

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is only one type of DV...

Thread: The losers of Cult 45 in 2022

"They were a nation of anxious people and they could do nothing individually, so they went mad en masse." A line from a 1983 play, about Japanese authoritarianism in 1942 (see thread.)
The above photo was taken at a May 6 T**** rally in rural PA for Turkish-American & longtime NJ resident "Dr" Mehmet Oz. I chose it bc such rallies were never held in county showgrounds with mud-covered fields & a rain-soaked Dear Leader.

Civilized venues have banned Cult 45.
Yes, Mehmet Oz is a legitimately qualified medical doctor. A cardiac surgeon, in fact. Which makes it all the more striking that he'd disregard the significant cardio-respiratory nature of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), first publicized globally in 2003 & then in 2020.

Thread.

Imma watching clips and commentary from the trial of the decade and I just had to share this with y'all. Watch him greeting supporters before seeing the person on the computer screen. LOL.

The trial is like a microcosm of a lot of things rn...

Oh BTW I just saw that #AmberHeardIsAPsychopath is trending, too.

At the time of the UK trial I listened to some of the audio recordings that were made available to the public. They showed me which spouse was the abuser and which one is the survivor.
The only time I use the term "victim" instead of survivor is if the person did not survive. We who have survived domestic abuse should hold our heads high and respect our ability to survive and in time, thrive, in spite of what abusers tried to do.
