1. If you’ve enjoyed/found my threads useful and have some disposable income would you consider donating to OMF? They fund research that will help those of us with #MECFS#LongCOVID#PTLDS & #fibromyalgia.
2. My life has basically been on hold for over a decade since I first developed ME/CFS. It took me until 2020 to get a diagnosis. Delayed diagnoses like mine are common because there are currently no labs that doctors can order to definitively diagnose ME/CFS.
3. Diagnosis is by process of elimination where doctors run tests for other possible diseases and rule them out to narrow it down to ME/CFS.
4. Even if you’ve been diagnosed with ME/CFS, there are currently no FDA-approved treatments, just a hodge podge of meds that some doctors & patients are experimenting with off label (meaning they’re approved to treat other things, but not ME/CFS) + nutraceuticals.
5. “Treatment” for ME/CFS just aims to help with symptom management. Doctors can’t prescribe anything to treat the root cause since we still don’t know what that is and there is no cure. 😢
6. Some people recover fully, some may recover and relapse in the future, and others like me are sick for decades.
It’s very much not a great way to live but we’re all limited in how much healthier we can get because ME/CFS research has been underfunded for decades.
7. Anyway, here are some fun threads I’ve written in the past.
This one is about the origins of Japanese curry 🍛 and chicken tikka masala.
8. This thread is about a video of a xylophone in a forest in Japan that went viral without attribution. It’s a 2011 TV ad for Docomo’s Touch Wood SH-08C phone.
I haven’t had a chance to read the report yet and not sure if I’ll be able to get to it any time soon but thought I’d share some thoughts and anecdotes that helped me to understand the complexity of human sexuality and how behavior doesn’t always align with identity.
People think it’s fun to go viral and maybe it is for some people but I tend to find it incredibly stressful. There’s a period of time in which you mostly get people agreeing with you and liking whatever you said but after about 24 hours it gets out past your adjacent networks…
… and more people start hate-sharing and replying to tell you what a godawful take this is.
This doesn’t happen every time but usually there’s almost always at least one person (if not a bunch) who wants to reply with their assholish 2 cents.
Yesterday US officials referred to Laguna Woods shooting suspect David Wenwei Chou (周文偉) as an immigrant from mainland China but Taiwanese officials have confirmed he was born in Taiwan in 1953.
1. Saw a tweet from someone trying to stir outrage because the mass shooting in Buffalo at Tops Friendly Market is getting more media coverage than the shooting of the congregation of the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church at Geneva Presbyterian in Laguna Woods.
2. First, trying to make a one to one comparison of media coverage of tragedies is stupid.
ALL public attacks—regardless of the motivations of the attackers—are tragic and devastating for families of the deceased, survivors, and others in the surrounding communities.
3. But 2nd, if you’re going to insist on comparing these cases, let’s look at the numbers.
1. I missed that there were 3 shootings in Milwaukee on Friday night after the Bucks lost to the Celtics in Game 7. They declared a state of emergency + 2-night curfew.
21 injured in total
9:10pm - 3 injured
10:30pm - 1 injured
after 11pm - 17 injured
1. I’m not going to try to do a deep dive into the Buffalo shooter’s life but thought I’d share some info I found that may provide some context about the shooter’s life.
2. Some people think we shouldn’t talk about shooters but I disagree. I’ll share those thoughts at the bottom of the thread.
3. Yesterday I was wondering why Peyton Gendron would choose a target that was hours away when it wasn’t a high-profile target. Why not one closer to home?
