How long has Scotland been British?
A look across over 2,000 years of history referencing archaeology, etymology, place names and historical records to address this question...

National identities are, by their nature, often politicised but in an era where some claim they are #ScottishNotBritish there is a case for a historical examination... Image
The very word 'British' comes from the Brythonic term 'Pritani' or painted / tattooed people, and was described the tribes in Scotland who had been here from around 800BC Image
The earlies written reference to the British Isles comes from the ancient Greek Pytheas of Massalia in the 4th Century BC, describing the whole island of GB including #Scotland Image
The very first named person in Scottish history was a Briton: Calgacus, the Chief of the Caledonian Confederacy in 83AD Image
The Romans on Hadrian's wall called the local tribes 'Britunculi' - or the wretched little British! 😂 Image
After the Romans left, there were various Briton kingdoms stretching from Breton in France up to the Firth of Forth. The Capital of Strathclyde was Dumbarton: (Gaelic 'Dùn Breatann' - meaning "The Hillfort of the Britons" Image
When the Scoti tribe invaded here in early medieval times from Ulster, as recorded in the Declaration of Arbroath, they fought the natives they found here 'Britonibus et Pictus' = the British and the Picts Image
The founder of the Royal Scottish Dynasty, Malcolm III married an English princess, and his daughter became Queen of England - Matilda! Image
Robert De Brus could be considered a British icon: he was of both Celtic and Norman descent, born in Essex with lands in Tottenham, Yorkshire, Carlisle & Scotland and, interestingly for #PlattyJoobs #platiniumjubilee #QueenElizabethII is his direct descendant still on the throne! Image
In the centuries before the union of the crowns, or the act of Union, the leading Scottish thinkers of the 'Scottish Renaissance' such as principal of @UofGlasgow and @univofstandrews called to unite North and South Britain Image
The two British Kingdoms were united when the Scottish King inherited the English throne, uniting the crowns in personal union to become 'king of Great Britain' Image
It was Scotland, through the Scottish Parliament, that first proposed Union, suggesting it in 1689, opening negotiations which failed in 1695 at the house of Lords.

A second Scottish proposal for union failed in 1700 when it wasn't passed in the English Commons. Image
It was finally in 1707 under Queen Anne that the Scottish Parliament, House of Commons, House of Lords & crown all agreed the two acts of union, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Image
That Scotland was British was recognised by our most famous poet Rabbie Burns, who called for British unity when he wrote "Be Britain still to Britain true, amang ourselves United" in 1795 to rally his Dumfries troops. Image
Scotland benefited heavily from the 'British' empire, with Glasgow being the second city of Empire'.

It's estimated 1 in 3 colonial governers in the Empire were Scottish: leading to some referring to "Scotland's Empire" Image
How long has Scotland been British? Over 2,000 years!

We've been British longer than Scottish- as reflected in our history, Placenames and our History.

The very word British describes our prehistoric tribes: like TV and penicillin Being British is a Scottish invention! Image
We shouldn't obsess over national labels -the world has one cosmopolitan global human race: but we should strive to know and understand our history.

Sadly, interference driven by identity-politics is re-writing history, often inaccurately. Image
I hope you've found this interesting, Try this 'history test' -

If you know someone educated under our nationalist government, ask them how long they think Scotland has been British; ...then show them this timeline and see if they were taught any of this in school. /end Image

It's natural with Sturgeon's milestone this week to think back on the past decade in Scotland.

I've been looking back at my own archive of memes & visualisations from over the years- and it's a sorry tale of a region gripped by stagnation and waste.

Short thread...🧵
August 2014. Just after the first debate between Darling and Salmond (- Just before the panicked YES campaign weaponised the fully devolved NHS.)

Look at the options & issues: How far we've failed to come any closer to clarity on currency!
This was only a year or two after the No vote; with agitation already beginning for #indyref2

As the SNP were forced, in negotiations and limited refreshing of the case, to let slip time after time that the claims of the NO campaign, of #BetterTogether were in fact correct...

Again the SNP wooing remainers to indy by claiming that it means Scotland in the EU...

I understand if you are tempted! but Scots deserve to make informed decisions & you. are. being. misinformed.

Don't take my word for it: Just go check everything in this thread yourself.
Knowledge is power. How well do you understand the process by which countries apply, and what hurdles there are, before they may gain membership?

If nothing else, just understanding this process will help you spot so much bullshit and misinformation!

One key blocker is "chapter 17" - the rules on Monetary policy.

It's literally impossible to meet this criteria while using the pound and launching a new currency isn't a quick fix.

Try asking them about it...

Just a couple of thoughts on #EFTA

1) if Scotland did become independent I would want it to be in the EU, I just a) don't think that's feasible and b) it doesn't offset damage of leaving UK
Many times when I point out the process and problems of EU membership, and someone realised they can't wish away issues (like keeping the pound and closing Chapter 17) they just dismiss it with "we'll just join EFTA in the meantime"
First: even if that was a trade equivalent of low tarrif EU membership it might be the least of bad options but it's still much worse than the status quo for trade

@LADYRAMPANT you claim "of course Scotland could be in the EU" and to have a master's in EU law; I'm hoping you can clarify some points?
Nicola Sturgeon claims we can keep the pound ( pegged or Sterlingised) and join the EU.
How could we close chapter 17 of the Acquis on Monetary Policy without Governance of Monetary policies such as quantitative easing and interest rates?
Can you outline if, when and how we would meet the Copenhagen Criteria for EU membership application?

Hi @MairiMcAllan got your leaflet and I have some questions...

1. You show an EU flag; can you confirm or deny that the SNP have a feasibility study into how long it would take an independent Scotland to join, and it makes a direct comparison to Montenegro (19 years) Image
2. You say "once the pandemic is behind us... ...from Boris Johnson"

So logically - if, by the time the pandemic is fully gone, Boris is no longer PM, then you will withdraw the threat of a referendum?
3. You claim we reject Nuclear Weapons - can you confirm you want an independent Scotland to be a Denmark style NATO member- allowing all NATO nuclear armed ships including rUK subs full and free access to all Scottish ports and waters?

This is a lengthy, but very worthwhile article. It's as relevant to the UK including Scotland as well as the USA.
You can listen to it as well. I recommend it.

I found two bits it talks about in social media *very* interesting; on different models and algorithms.

One model delays posts by 24 hours. You get a chance to remove or correct things before they go public. It slows discourse.
Another model was how to build consensus; people post something. You either agree with it or disagree. No reply function.

Then the algorithm promotes post with *consensus* not engagement.
