Watch @AhonaMehdi’s testimony on why the expansion of MAiD to mature minors is dangerous here: parl.ca/Committees/en/… today at 6:30pm. Or tune into our social media as we’ll be posting clips.
Here's an update on where the federal gov't is at re: the expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying. The Special Joint Committee on MAiD has been struck. It met today & heard from staff at the Department of Justice & Health Canada. #BillC7#cndpoli 1/
📽️
The committee will meet until June 23rd and they are looking into:
-Rules as it relates to the expansion of MAiD for people with mental illnesses (which will be allowed starting 2023)
-Potential expansion of MAiD for "mature" minors
-Advanced directives, and more. 2/
Here is some of what we learned today: we know that about 200 people used MAiD who were not terminally ill since it expanded. We also know that MAiD deaths will make up 4% of deaths in Canada per year & that data around Black and Indigenous deaths won't be available until 2024 3/
We're tuned into the Special Joint Committee of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). We will be live tweeting as much as we can. Tune in here: parl.ca/Committees/en/…
They'll discuss access of MAiD re: mature minors & the sunset clause re: access due to mental illness. 1/
Abby Hoffman from the Department of Health is giving a statistical overview. In 2020, 7,000 people used MAiD, accounting for 2.5% deaths in Canada. Number of MAiD cases will approach 10k in Canada. Around 200 are disabled younger people who aren't dying (i.e chronic pain MS, etc)
Cases where death isn't foreseeable: "we've heard from some practitioners that doing these assessments is extremely difficult. Health Canada is now funding a nationally accredited MAiD curriculum to help with informed consent, vulnerability, and MAiD re: mental illness."
The Ontario Ministry of Health Update today was just a further entrenchment of normalized deaths.
Ten children have died from COVID-19, two are in ICUs right now. These were children, who died because @fordnation failed to protect them.
@fordnation Kieran Moore, said "So we’ve not seen any significant threat to the health of children.”
We see the threat to the health of disabled children. Any number of children We care about the two children fighting for their lives in the ICU.
@fordnation Thousands of people will be forced into the hospital, where ventilation & under-staffing will further compound their struggles. People are dying, and their lives are being swept under the rug of "comorbidities"
In collaboration with @CPEPgroup we've launched a summer series called Cops out of Care Work. These panels ask us to radically rethink our current care systems by centering disability justice & abolition. #HamOnt#DisabilityTwitter
Cops out of Care: May 27, 6 PM:
Learn about the interconnection between disability, policing & prisons. Triage protocol, #LTCjustice, & ongoing deaths of disabled people demonstrate the role of policing in our lives
Abolish the Psych Ward: June 30, 6 PM:
This panel will discuss the history of madness in Canada and the ways in which madness continues to be policed. This panel will feature Dr. @ajesusjoseph from @McMasterU and Dr. @syrusmarcusware from @BLM_TO.
Minister Elliot blatantly lied earlier this week when she said there is no final draft of the Critical Care Triage protocol. Media personnel have seen it. Doctors have already received iterations of it & have been forced to use it (THREAD) 1/7 #onpoli#triageprotocol@fordnation
The provincial government has had over a year to implement solutions that would prevent the need or use of the protocol. Instead of increasing social assistance rates or instituting a moratorium on eviction, Ford made it impossible for disabled people to stay safe at home 2/7
Disabled people have filled ICU units across the GTA and that a majority of them are racialized and disabled, folks who were essential workers. Disabled people in critical care are being put in helicopters and sent to other cities without consent of their friends and family. 3/7
