There is so much wrong with this piece by @MKarnitschnig on Merkel's recent interview (which has such an importance and significance in the current context of war) that I feel obliged to engage with some of the issues that he mentions. Thread 🧵 politico.eu/article/german…
The start of the piece is already a misconsctruct. "Angela Merkel isn’t mad, she’s just disappointed. She always knew Vladimir was a problem, but this? Barbaric. It’s not Germany’s fault, much less hers. After all, no one could have anticipated this Katastrophe." Really?
Merkel first of all condemns in the strongest possible words the Russian attack on Ucraine. And she says several times in the interview she feared this outcome. This is why she opposed Ukranian membership to NATO in Bucarest in 2008 and why she negotiated the Minsk agreements.
Here is the Dutch-Spanish Non-paper on strategic autonomy. This is a milestone. A few years ago The Netherlands was quite sceptic about the concept. Now it embraces it with one of the most euro-enthusiast countries in the EU. Key sentence in a thread 🧵 permanentrepresentations.nl/permanent-repr…
"Strategic autonomy does not mean isolation or retreat, but, rather, a reformulation of how to understand sovereignty, advancing towards operational sovereignty, i.e. the capacity to promote an agenda of its own."
"We must seek greater coherence between the EU’s internal and external policies. This will entail modifying rules and procedures, and strengthening the EU’s structures, which were originally conceived for Europe’s economic activity to be separate from its geopolitical activity"
Ok, let me start here a small thread on yesterday's failed #EUCO. Let me do this with my Spanish half of the mind (the view from the South) and my Swiss half (which is sometimes even more brutal than the German and the Dutch perspectives, thats why Switzerland is not in the EU).
First of all, we have entered this new Covid-19 crisis with many open wounds from the previous 2010-2012 debt crisis. The biggest asset among partners is trust. And trust was eroded than and has not been recovered since. So this is not the best context to collaborate.
Lets start with the Spanish perspective. The situation is dire, this crisis will be harder than anything we've seen. We are in a state of emergency, people are locked-down in their homes and hundreds are dying every day. We have a joint enemy Covid-19 and we must fight together
