“Cells & tissues that control blood flow are damaged & the blood’s tendency to clot is amplified. #MicroClots, leftover from the viral assault or fueled by its aftermath, might be gumming up the body’s circulation, to disastrous effect” #LongCovid science.org/content/articl…
“In some patients we have specific areas where no blood flow comes in” or the flow is reduced, Buonsenso says. Is that driving their lingering symptoms? “I can’t say this is the truth, of course. But this makes sense.” #LongCovid
“Where there should have been bright oranges and yellows, signifying pulsing blood, one lung was nearly completely blue, indicating little flow. Buonsenso believes #MicroClots or chronic damage to the lining of blood vessels may be impairing blood flow.” #LongCovid
“The knotty question is what to do next. Buonsenso’s patients don’t meet the current criteria for taking anticoagulant drugs that prevent blood clots or keep them from getting bigger, because no clots are visible on their scans.” #LongCovid
“With seriously ill children in front of him, Buonsenso didn’t want to wait to launch a clinical trial… All five patients are now taking anticoagulants—which carry the risk of severe bleeding—under close monitoring… He’s heartened by their progress. Several are back in school”
@MartaEsperti was one of the first #LongCovid patients in Europe to receive a lung SPECT-CT scan, & it looked just like the compromised lungs of the sick children Buonsenso scanned later. ‘My right lung is almost completely blue,’ she says.”
@MartaEsperti doctors believe damage to tiny blood vessels & #MicroClots are the culprit. The theory of persistent microclots gained further credence in the summer of 2021, when @resiapretorius & colleagues reported such clots could linger in the blood of #LongCovid patients.”
@resiapretorius team found signs of #MicroClots in people with #LongCovid, but not in healthy people. One challenge facing clinicians keen to hunt for microclots in blood is that detecting them is a laborious process, although Pretorius is working to make it more accessible.”
“The work by @resiapretorius an emerging pattern in which biology of acute & chronic COVID-19 overlap. Early in the pandemic drs recognized blood clots as a signature of early, severe illness.. Even people with milder disease were at heightened risk of heart attacks & strokes.”
“The two diseases—acute COVID-19 and #LongCovid—‘aren’t very different,’ posits @DaveLeeERMD. He suspects #MicroClots explain many chronic symptoms.. Tiny clots in the brain could explain cognitive troubles, or clots may kill small fiber nerve cells & drive @Dysautonomia.”
“‘I oscillate in my excitement’ for #LongCovid theories, says @PutrinoLab.. Right now, his enthusiasm for the #MicroClots hypothesis is running high.. that team has preliminary data to suggest the amount of micro clots in blood correlates with the severity of Long Covid symptoms”
“All agree that solo operators are unlikely. Lingering virus, for example, could attack the circulatory system, triggering blood clots or chronic inflammation. ‘I see this as a triangle,’ Buonsenso says, with each trigger potentially explaining, or even amplifying, the others.”
For @microbeminded2 and others, fitting the puzzle pieces together is of urgent concern. “I consider #LongCovid to be a massive emergency,” she says.
I’ll stop here but this is the best research article I have read on #LongCovid since NY Times “how LC exhaust the body” earlier this year.

This article is taking a look at #MicroClots, viral persistence & immune dysregulation. I agree they could be the Holy Trinity.

YES, #LongCovid really is a mass disabling event.

"The resulting estimate of the number of 16-and-older Americans with a disability is up by about 2 million since early 2020. It had been rising over the decade before. but not at nearly that fast a pace." bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
"More than a million additional Americans, representing a 19% increase from before the pandemic, are complaining of a disability while continuing to work." #LongCovid
"The % of respondents reporting severe problems remembering or concentrating has gone up both among those who’ve definitely had Covid and those who probably haven’t, but it’s higher and the rise has been steeper among the first group." #LongCovid

The following folks have reached out to me looking for help with #LongCovid in past 2 months.

- College dorm-mate
- High school classmate
- Best friend’s uncle
- Hometown friend’s child
- Friend’s mom
- Prior-gf’s uncle
- Venue booker

Won’t be long til you know someone 🧵
Here’s the message I received from my college dorm-mate this weekend (Shared with their permission).

Their story is important. They noted they can’t be public about their condition, “because my work is super sensitive right now & I can’t have certain folks knowing.” #LongCovid Image
They noted they’re able to work (remote) but that’s literally all they can do, can’t go out, exercise, or make any plans. They’re ‘functional’ but very miserable. It’s how I was the first year. Classic ‘invisible illness’.

Hey everybody I know you’re exhausted (or at least I am) but please keep talking about #LongCovid and sharing your story.

So many are trying to erase us, but with the numbers we’re seeing, we can make this issue impossible to ignore.
The amount of folks who are talking about #LongCovid compared to even four months ago is staggering. It’s working.
This also goes for our allies who have been fighting this battle for decades with other post viral & infectious onset conditions (#ME, @Dysautonomia, #Lyme, etc). Their stories, guidance & support are invaluable during this fight.

#LongCovid may be the cause of unexplained cases of hepatitis in children around the world in recent months, Israeli researchers found” jpost.com/health-and-wel…
“The study noted that liver injury has been recorded in adult patients with severe infections & children can be affected with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), which can injure the liver. Post-COVID liver injuries have been increasingly reported in adults as well.”
“The new Israeli study analyzed the cases of patients who were hospitalized in Schneider Children's Medical Center last year due to liver injury. All five patients had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 before presentation of symptoms.” #LongCovidKids

People DO CARE about #LongCovid once they’re informed about it.

Every week I now have friends asking me: “Hey my work is telling me to go back in to office & we have no mask mandates - but they don’t know anything about Long Covid - what can I share with them?”
And then they follow up: “I don’t understand how we can be making these decisions while we still have no answers or solutions for #LongCovid

The reality of how prevalent & random the condition is resonates with people who have been following the science with a sober outlook.
Also most of these people (my friends) now know 1-3 other people with #LongCovid in addition to me. They’re like “it’s definitely not just him, it’s concerning.” - it’s simple self-preservation.

Plenty of gov/health officials say “We simply need more data” when confronted with a inconvenient truth about infection, such as #LongCovid. The reality is they don’t want more data, because the more we learn about infection the more unmitigated spread looks like total insanity.
Meanwhile when they get the data, this is how they deal with it.
And as @myrabatchelder pointed out today, the head of @UCSF admitted to hoping somebody would find something wrong with the studies we’ve been seeing on long term effects, but finally realized they are credible.

He said what most are thinking: “I don’t want to deal with this”
