New: Merrick Garland made an unannounced visit to Ukraine for a meeting with Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova to discuss efforts to identify and apprehend suspected war criminals, according to a Justice Department official. usatoday.com/story/news/pol… via @USATODAY
This is very important because Putin commits war crimes every day. Genocide must be called out. But how will Garland watch today’s 1/6 public hearing in Ukraine? Hopefully the time difference and streaming ability aren’t obstacles. We need his focus on the war against democracy.

Vice Chair Liz Cheney says today’s hearing will focus on Trump’s efforts to overturn the election by pressuring state officials and state legislatures. She name-checks Rudy and Eastman. She also previews election officials who were threatened including witness Gabe Sterling.
In her opening remarks, Liz Cheney said Donald Trump was aware his false claims of election fraud could lead to violence, yet he continued to pressure officials into changing the results of the election at the state level. Trump “had a direct and personal role” in the pressure.

It’s way worse than we thought.
This group has re-branded since Charlottesville, less Neo-Nazi on the outside, more preppy, always with face coverings. They have been charged with a misdemeanor, and face 6 months in jail or a thousand dollar fine. Only two are from Idaho. vice.com/en/article/88q…

Today’s take aways from 1/6 hearing: Barr said Trump was “detached from reality” after the election. That he never had any interest in the facts. There was two teams in the White House, “Team Normal” according to Stepien (how normal could they be if they worked for Donald?)
Versus “Team Rudy”- that’s where the bs ballot harvesting, voting machine tampering were hoisted up the flagpole, where they were all shot down in the courts. Stepien said “I didn’t mind being characterized as being part of Team Normal”
On Election night, at the White House, Stepien told Trump to wait to declare victory after Fox called Arizona for Biden, which he waited till 2am to falsely boast of winning. Remember that Jared called Murdoch livid. thedailybeast.com/jared-kushner-…

Opening statement now from Vice Chair Cheney. She says we will hear more from Bill Barr’s recorded testimony. She says we will hear firsthand testimony from his campaign advisors to wait for all the votes to be counted. Also testimony about “apparently inebriated Rudy Guiliani”.
Zoe Lofgren is making her opening statement. She says today’s hearing will focus on the false narrative about the fraudulent election. “Today we will demonstrate that 2020 election was not stolen.” She notes how the lies were used to raise hundreds of millions of dollars.
