I'll never forget one of the best pieces of advice I got from a potential supervisor a few days before the interview for a scholarship in a PhD programme.
Wow, that was mindblowing. I thought that pitching our ideas was only for entrepreneurs or marketing professionals…how wrong was I.
It made so much sense. But how can we script the pitch when preparing for PhD interviews?
First, we need to understand that scripting or rehearsing the interview is not only useful, but it's necessary.
You have to be yourself, you have to let your enthusiasm shine through, but you have to prepare for it in advance.
Here are 3 elements you need to include in your three-minute interview pitch:
1) Set the context of your PhD project, and make sure you give them an overview of what your research entails. Tip: include 3-4 keywords of your project when setting the context.
2) Explain the problem or gap that your research will address in plain English. Avoid jargons.
3) Explain how your research will address the problem or which expected outcomes you have.
Write down these details and rehearse them by yourself (you can video record it a few times or use a mirror) and/or with a friend.
This helped me a lot. Oh, I passed the interview and got the scholarship.
I hope this tip helps you.
