Press Release 🧵: #Wetsuweten Members Sue Police, Coastal Gaslink and Private Security for Targeted Harassment Campaign

Read below, or on yintahaccess.com

Photo: June 22 - A Wet'suwet'en member approaches RCMP & private security as they idle at Gidimt'en checkpoint.
1. Members of the Gidimt’en Clan of the Wet’suwet’en Nation have filed a notice of civil claim against the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, B.C.’s Minister of Justice, Coastal Gaslink Pipeline LTD., and private security contractor Forsythe.
2. The lawsuit follows months of targeted harassment and intimidation, through which hundreds of police and private security personnel have attempted to coerce Wet’suwet’en people into abandoning homes and village sites on unceded Wet’suwet’en territory.
3. Since Feb 2022 RCMP C-IRG accompanied by Forsythe, Coastal GasLink’s private security contractor, have continually harassed, followed, surveilled & intimidated Gidimt’en clan members at their homes, including the Gidimt’en Checkpoint village site & the Tsel Kiy Kwa village.
4. In the span of a few months, individual RCMP officers have entered the Gidimt’en Checkpoint more than 700 times.
5. In 2018, Gidimt’en people reoccupied land inhabited by their ancestors, building cabins and homes at the Gidimt’en Checkpoint to serve as a base for traditional cultural practices.
6. With a new feast hall under construction, the Gidimt’en Checkpoint and Tsel Kiy Kwa village sites are increasingly important sites of Wet’suwet’en resistance, resilience, and resurgence.
7. In recent months, the lawsuit alleges, police have threatened & made unlawful arrests, demanded identification from Gidimt’en guests, blocked visitors, entered village sites multiple times per day, assaulted & battered visitors, shone high beams and spotlights...
8. ... awakened and harassed sleeping residents, seized Gidimt’en equipment and property, opened doors to residential buildings, and followed individuals on remote forest service roads.
9. Meanwhile, Coastal GasLink’s private security contractor Forsythe has deployed ex-law enforcement to conduct 24 hour surveillance, continually filming residents including children, on Gidimt’en villages and sharing information with RCMP.
10. “The police tactics used on Gidimt’en territory have had no lawful purpose or basis. They have been unreasonable and excessive, discriminatory on the basis of race, malicious and an abuse of police powers...
11. "...They represent an effort to suppress lawful activity and the assertion of Indigenous rights and title,” states the Notice of Civil Claim.
12. Last month, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination issued its third rebuke to BC and Canada, calling for a withdrawal of police forces and the cessation of the forced eviction of Wet’suwet’en people from their territory.
13. The letter urges Canada to cease construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, until free, and prior informed consent is received from the Wet’suwet’en people and to engage in negotiations with these impacted communities.
14 of 14. The criminalization of Wet’suwet’en people is not the way to reconciliation. The Gidimt'en clan wants to see an end to the illegal harassment and intimidation of Wet'suwet'en people and homesites and for CIRG to be immediately removed from Gidimt'en Territory.

1/ Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we want to bring everyone’s attention to the yintah. On a day when many politicians will be out showing their faces at events meant to celebrate our culture they only subscribe to when it serves them. ImageImageImage
2/ They do not want to acknowledge and follow the laws of our land. Laws that have been in place since time immemorial. Laws that restrict their access to our territories and resources. No, they just want to see us dance and sing and go home quietly.
3/ The destruction of Wet’suwet’en yintah and the imminent threat to Wedzin Kwa is not what they want to discuss. But this is our reality. One year after the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act became LAW we are still fighting.

1/On April 13, 2022 twenty seven land defenders arrested in the fall and into winter of 2021 on Wet’suwet’en territory appeared virtually before Justice Church. Coastal Gaslink’s lawyer, Kevin O’Callaghan, recommended that the charges be criminal contempt, and not civil contempt.
2/...this would mean that the land defenders arrested during the Coyote Camp occupation at the drill pad site and the Likhts’amisyu Chief arrested on his own territory would face criminal charges.

We need to make David Eby aware that CGL, the CIRG, and RCMP...
3/...are abusing the intent of the court injunction to violently and illegally criminalize sovereign Wet’suwet’en people in an attempt to push through an industrial project that does not have the consent of the true title holders to the land.
