Tonight, #FridayLimericks returns to acknowledge @replouiegohmert for his bumbling insurreptitude. #LimerickRhyme
Mr. Gohmert would like to insist
The Committee should cease and desist.
Inconvenient new facts
Should be given the axe—
And besides, the request here was dissed.
And okay, Louie didn’t seem bright
With his thoughts on our climate change plight.
“Let’s push back on the moon!”
Kind of sounds like a loon—
If one wanted to make fun, one might.
And on climate change, maybe you could
Find some fault when he thinks that it’s good.
When there’s science to sort,
Gohmert’s brain falls far short.
Won’t stop talking, though maybe he should.
Come to think of it, that isn’t all;
On all topics, his mind comes up small.
Is there hope? Maybe some;
If he’s honestly dumb,
Then while brain fails, integrity’s tall.
So with all this, it now seems absurd
To trust Gohmert just based on his word.
And for 1/6, his job
Was to rile up the mob—
So he amplified Trump, and they heard.
With democracy’s life on the line,
Louie figured its death would be fine.
If there’s power to gain,
He can live with our pain.
There are Trumpian shoes still to shine.
So it’s true that this jerk isn’t smart,
But much worse is his cold, lying heart.
He’ll leave Congress next year
To a unison jeer—
With a path forward we need to chart.

The Supreme Court has done tremendous damage to our nation this week. I don’t say this lightly, or comfortably. But on a human level, and on an institutional level, this is a dark time. (Thread) #ResistanceUnited #LiveBlue2022
Since my time in law school, I’ve always tried to understand the reasoning as a possible justification for Supreme Court opinions. The institution is responsible for protecting the rights of citizens, and I have immense professional and personal respect for it. It matters.
But today’s iteration, and a majority of its members, does not hold that same respect. The opinions issued this week drip with disdain for the Court’s history and for the people whose rights should be protected. They operate solely as the payoff for right-wing power plays.
No, Marco. It’s because politicians like you lie all the time and decide which people matter to you. Distrust doesn’t come from trying to treat everyone with respect; it’s people like you. Liars and hypocrites who put their own political position over the people. (Thread)
People who post Bible verses while supporting the least Christ-like political positions in existence. People who send thoughts and prayers while the NRA bankrolls them. People who have an opportunity to stand for what is right, but shrink from the moment.
People who use political “service” positions primarily as a means to lift their financial outlook. People who purport to lead but jump on any divisive bandwagon they think gets them ahead of someone else. People who kiss Trump’s feet when they KNOW he is a cheat and a thief.
Republicans are taking two approaches to the hearings. To be clear, neither of these approaches has anything to do with addressing the evidence being presented. But, they are working hard to distract, so I’ll take a moment to acknowledge their frenetic dance. (Thread)
The first is the tried and true two-step of the GOP: whataboutism. “Why aren’t we holding hearings about X?” And of course there are issues on which this nation needs to work, most of them foreseeable, but nonetheless needing to be addressed.
We are still dealing with a pandemic, exacerbated by a stunning misinformation campaign that fought against efforts to avoid the worst of it or emerge more quickly from it. As the world opened, prices were always going to go up.
If you don’t understand members of the LGBTQ community, that’s okay. Fully understanding another person is impossible; you are not in that person’s head. But your lack of understanding is not an excuse for hate, or violence. It is not an excuse to deny someone else’s humanity.
Every time you see another person, you have an opportunity to learn. To grow. To connect to someone whose identity and ideas and experience are different from yours. If you choose to be afraid, to hate someone for being different, that is your weakness, not theirs.
And if you are in a position of leadership, and choose not to make the effort to understand your constituents, you are the most vile, brittle kind of weakling. The @RonDeSantisFL and @GregAbbott_TX types are choosing to divide—and choosing to hurt people—because it’s convenient.
I’m seeing a lot of suggestions that @FoxNews isn’t showing the January 6 hearings because they are afraid. While I’m sure there is some concern there about evidence of their role in the conspiracy, I don’t think this is an act of fear. It’s one of entrenchment. (Thread)
After all, Fox has shown over time that it gives little thought to being seen as a serious news outlet. It’s televised sponsored content, part of a paid misinformation network. It masquerades as news or entertainment, as suits its purpose in the moment.
And the Looney Toons brigade of personalities (Tucker as Elmer Fudd, Hannity as Yosemite Sam, Ingraham as, well, a cartoon Nazi) just keep playing their part, unbothered by the absurdities they spew or the damage they cause. Destruction of democracy is now their brand.
We are going to hear a lot from GOP domestic terrorism apologists like @GOPLeader, @tedcruz, and @Jim_Jordan that the presentation of evidence by the @January6thCmte is too “political.” So what does that mean here? (Thread)
Most obviously, these will be politicians making political media appearances to deride politics in an effort to distract from politically damaging facts, in their hope of increasing their own political power. So, yeah.
But beyond that, maybe it’s time to stop being defensive about the importance of our political processes. We expect our representatives and senators who run for political office to show disdain for the process in which they must engage to be elected. It’s a silly dance, really.
