Honoured to support children living with #LongCovid and their families in asking for better research, treatment, and support from the UK government. Long Covid is a disaster in the making, which risk to affect young people for years and decades to come
It is imperative we stop transmission of SARS-CoV-2 as much as possible. This is especially in crowded indoor environments, where children are at high risk of infection. It is key to provide the best possible treatment and support for children already affected by #LongCovidKids
For the UK itself, we know from the @ONS survey and data provided by support groups ~ charities like @LongCovidKids that a non-insignificant number of children and young people infected with SARS-CoV-2 go on to develop prolonged symptoms, sequelae and health problems #LongCovid
Data provided by support groups, and surveys like @ONS are increasingly substantiated by top research on the pathophysiology of #LongCovid in adults and children, which reveals the severe damage inflicted by SARS-CoV-2 infection to the human body. A 🧵
We also know that viral and other infections are increasingly linked to long-term health problems down the line. Sometimes this damage can emerge years/decades after the initial infection. A 🧵
It's key we take this into account in our pandemic response
I truly hope policy makers, medical professionals, and health bodies fully acknowledge the short- and long-term implications of infection and repeated infection with a dangerous SARS virus. People already living with #LongCovid deserve the best support and top-notch research
To know more about the research being done on #LongCovid I share this 🧵 I've been curating for months. A selection of studies. I add more research when possible and when studies come out. We know the long-term effects of covid are a key health emergency
We know many SARS survivors were ill for years or never fully recovered. This is an health emergency of global scale. Children and young people deserve the best of our support. A 🧵 I curated on #longSARS since 2021
@anaestricks The first follow-up on the patients hospitalized in Wuhan, which resulted in this @TheLancet paper on post-covid complications at 6 months, started only on 16 June 2020. By then, the term #LongCovid had already been created in the west.
@anaestricks@TheLancet The paper on long-term symptoms from China doesn't even use the concept of #LongCovid and focuses a lot on psychological, pulmonary etc sequelae in hospitalized patients. In western countries, by the time the Chinese study was published, we already had recognition by the WHO
@anaestricks@TheLancet We already understood that SARS-CoV-2 led to a prolonged disease, with severe cardiovascular and multi-system symptoms, and vast sequelae, which could impact the non-hospitalized and children too. So, of course, I don't know if China has other information that doesn't disclose
Top specialists in the healthcare system in Italy report to @Agenzia_Ansa that covid patients with "classic" covid lung pathology and need for mechanical ventilation are growing again. Hospitalizations and cases are on the rise, including in young people
On 29 June, Italy reported over 94.000 official covid cases, jumping up of almost 10.000 units from the day before, according to official data from the Ministry of Health. Of course, many cases are never reported officially, or tested,, so the data are an underestimate
The positivity rate is now 26.3%. Over 6000 people are currently hospitalized.
Tool's frontman MJ Keenan reported to have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 for a *fourth* time. Keenan had suffered two severe bouts of covid in 2020 already, including hospitalization for pneumonia. He reported lung damage.
I wish him fast recovery and I understand somewhat his being more fatalistic about getting infected given the situation. But I also note not everyone has access to the same level of care of a noted and wealthy singer. Not everyone will survive infection or recover
We need to take suppression seriously and implement the safety measures that will limit SARS-CoV-2 spread as close to zero as possible. We have the tools already. People are being exposed unnecessarily to a potentially fatal SARS virus
In the news today 🙄
F. Locatelli, MD, former head of the scientific committee that advised on Italy's covid response: "we are entering a phase of endemicity"
A kind reminder covid is a pandemic disease, with local waves and peaks i.e. epidemics. We're on a new wave right now
Apologies for the bad photo, took in a hurry! But, again, exhausted to see people, who are regarded as "experts" and hold positions of power and prestige, being platformed to give incorrect information. SARS-CoV-2 is not an endemic virus.
A virus which spreads across multiple continents and continues to grow, again and again, in multiple epidemics, is not in a stable "endemic" status. It's a pandemic virus with local epidemics. Even if covid were "endemic", this wouldn't mean "mild" or something to "live with".
Tennis stars and former finalists M. Berrettini and M. Cilic had to withdraw from Wimbledon because of covid.
Saddened that ongoing SARS2 spread and a lack of mitigations are putting the health and dreams of so many at risk, both famous and normal people
Both Cilic and Berrettini are reported to be symptomatic, but not with severe issues now
Berrettini reports a few days of fever and flu-like symptoms.
Cilic reports not feeling well.
Italy's Berettini was last year's finalist and a candidate for the title
As usual, my best wishes for a fast recovery to both. I share this little sport story as it's an example of the damage unleashed SARS2 spread can do to people, and society as a whole. Both Cilic and Berrettini are elite athletes with a wide support network (care, wealth etc.)
Some medical professionals need to reckon with the historical reality of #LongCovid. It was patients meeting on Twitter and support groups to identify, name, and gain recognition for Long Covid from WHO. Many medical professionals in early 2020 said covid was to last 2 weeks
Twitter and support groups played a critical role in changing the arc of our understanding of covid in 2020. Covid was initially depicted as a self-contained, short respiratory illness in most. It wasn't. Patients proved covid was a multi-system, prolonged disease in many
Twitter and support groups have also played a critical role in supporting patients, sharing scientific information, and offering innovative policy solutions | the story e.g. here
