1/ Zoom out. You and I are soooo insufficiently bullish about the past and the future of #NFTs…
…A thesis of acting on the ‘known knowns’ and the ‘known unknowns’…

2/ From the first block, #BTC as a tech & a currency forever changed the future of the world economy.
When it was recognised blockchain tech could extend further & switch on the market forces of supply & demand for ALL digital items - almost nothing would ever be the same again.
3/ As recorded on bitcointalk, Satoshi himself contributed to these concepts of digital ownership & how it could be achieved.
The result was BitDNS aka #Namecoin.
The earliest of all non-fungible assets were created on Namecoin.
4/ Soon after, @yoniassia and @VitalikButerin (& others) pushed the boundaries further and experimented with non-fungible digital ownership on #BTC in the form of colored coins.
5/ Evolving this technology and ownership paradigm further, in Jan 2014 the internet protocol @CounterpartyXCP was created which leveraged the OP_RETURN function on #BTC allowing for non-fungible & semi-fungible digital assets to be tokenised directly to BTC
6/ In 2014 & early 2015 (prior to the birth of ETH) this radical concept of digital ownership on BTC was further experimented with by a small number of projects & was even successfully commercialised in the instance of EDS - Spells of Genesis (the 1st use of #NFTs in a game).
7/ Shortly after this (in 2016) the the iconic #Rarepepe project took the concept of digital ownership to new heights & demonstrated to the world that this was the dawn of a revolutionary new asset class & market for cryptoart / digital collectibles.
8/ The additional functionality made possible by Ethereum furthered the experimentation & community awareness of the digital ownership paradigm through projects like Etheria (2015), Cryptopunks, Crytptokitties & DadaArt Creeps and Weirdos amongst others.
9/The growth & participation in this digital marketplace has been exponential… billions are now being invested into building out its expansion.
In 5, or 50 years ahead, will our world be more digital or less?
Digital ownership is the inevitable bedrock of our digital age.
10/We’re the earliest of adopters in an emergence period of a world changing tech with almost no comparable reference point.
This makes the earliest of these artefacts highly significant. And not just the ‘grails’ but also the few lesser known historical assets in their shadow.
11/ I’m convinced that my vision for where digital ownership is going is still woefully underestimating it.
But, I do have a pretty good grasp on where it came from & the pioneering projects, people & assets that laid the foundations for it all
2/ It'll take me a bit longer to complete the update of my medium article that goes with it.
Keep in mind the focus period remains just 2011-2017.
I do love some other projects that come after this, but as per the chart, there are considerably more so harder to document.
3/ Pls let me know if I've missed any projects so I can include in next update (I won't take as long next time!), or any if there are any inaccuracies.
The purpose is the same - to leave an accurate narrative re the early NFT emergence history for posterity.
I hope it's helpful.
1/6 I enjoy helping people find vintage #NFT treasures ahead of the market tsunami.
I did this when #cryptopunks were under 2 ETH & for a while now I've been alerting people to #SpellsofGenesis and #RarePepes
I have some other thoughts to share... (NFA)
2/6 It is clear that the two most important #NFT relics - which laid the foundations for the entire NFT/CryptoArt movement - are #spellsofgenesis and #rarepepes. These pioneered the golden NFT emergence age (2014-2016) and none others are in the same league for significance...
