IM & MP's Conversation prior to #AAPM2022 mtg (@aapmHQ )

8 am: MP seems to be lost in thoughts, passing by a C-arm (IM)

IM: Hey doc, I see u are working on ur talks, where r u heading?

MP: How did u know I am working on my talks? Yes, I am going to #AAPM2022 meeting in DC

1/
IM: Well, whenever ur head is busy preparing for talks, u hardly say hello to us. That’s not just me, all my buddies say the same

MP: Great! now y’all think I am crazy

IM: No doc. BTW are you going to attend talks on #IGRT

2/
MP: Yes, I see an increasing trend in use of imaging in radiation therapy. Hence, I will be checking out talks on imaging in therapy
IM: I hear from my cousins, that they are very busy these days, taking pictures of every patient each time they come for radiation treatment

3/
MP: Yes, imaging every time helps physicians to ensure they are on target. Hats off to you guys for bringing therapy and imaging physicists together. But there is lot of work to done.

IM: Like what?

4/
MP: Well for example, there is room for optimizing imaging protocols in therapy. Till now, radiation doses from imaging (KeV) during therapy wasn't considered a big issue as patients generally got very large doses of radiation (MeV) during treatment anyway.

5/
MP: Now that patients are living longer after cancer treatments, we have to be concerned about imaging doses they receive.

IM: Was that the reason why you and your buddies were evaluating us (CBCT scanners) all of last year with that new phantom?

MP: Yes.

6/
MP: Yes, it was a great learning experience. It highlighted the importance of regular QC on you guys (CBCT), wherever you are working.

IM: Thanks doc, for checking us out so that we don’t get blamed for not providing good images.

7/
IM: (continues) BTW, have a good time, say hello to your friend from RadBound Univ and fellow officers from IOMP.

MP: Will do!

"Scientists have called on their professional societies to take action, particularly regarding conference locations, w some proposing boycotting meetings in states that ban abortion"

@aapmHQ we are not alone - every prof society is facing this issue
“Being an African-American woman, and just knowing the stats—that Black birthing persons already experience high levels of pregnancy-related mortality—the overturning of Roe versus Wade is a death sentence for Black women scientists and birthing persons.”
“Any person capable of childbearing could have an emergency related to pregnancy at your conference,” Northwestern University neuroscience postdoc Ana Vlasits tweeted. “Your event should not be held in a place where your childbearing colleagues might be put at risk.”

MP looks relaxed, calls out to his buddy IM

MP: Hey buddy, did U & UR cousins figured-out the cause of the artifact?

IM: We tried, but not sure, we even gave ‘a piece of our mind’ to the guy who did this to you. So please tell us what was the cause?

1/
MP: Well, first I was puzzled too, because such artifacts were not seen when I did head CT dosimetry. Then when I examined my setup, I realized that I was placing the CT body phantom in between the body and head flat board on the scanner table.

2/ Image
MP: Even though the headboard fitted like a puzzle, I could see the air-gap which was the cause of the artifact. Once I moved the body phantom away from the joint surface, the artifact disappeared.

IM: Oh, it was that simple!

3 pm: MP ready to leave the hospital, but something is bothering him

IM: Hey doc, why do look so puzzled?
MP: Nothing, it’s your other cousin – ‘CT SIM’
IM: What’s up with him?
MP: Look here, I was trying to test him out after the new CT tube, but he gives me this image

1/ Image
IM: Ooo, that's ugly
MP: I thought something is wrong with my phantom or with him.
IM: Then what did you do?
MP: Just that I was away for few days, your cousin tried to pull a fast one. He thought I couldn’t figure it out.
IM: Did you?
MP: Yes

2/
MP: Yes and then I really gave him a long talk, shake him up a bit. Then, he gave me the right image – see here.
IM: So, what was the cause?
MP: Well, that is what I want you to figure out and tell me after the long weekend.

IM: BTW doc, did my cousin’s warning helpful & did u get a chance to see my cousin?

MP: But saw where he worked.

IM: So, you didn’t get to see my cousin?

MP: No, but I did talk to him, and he is doing quite well. Only thing was he & all his buddies were tied up taking care of patients & I wasn’t able to see him.
