1) And now some news from the wonderful and alternative universe of Patriarch Kiril, of Moscow.
During a sermon on 3 July in St Petersburg he spoke about how jealous the rest of the world is of Russia, for its "otherness".
2) Today we really need God to be with us, and here, on the western border of Russia, this is especially felt. Many are rising up today against our Fatherland, but we know that the Fatherland has done nothing wrong to anyone.
3) And they rebel not because we are bad, but because we are different. This otherness of Russia arouses feelings of jealousy, envy and indignation, but we cannot change ourselves.
4) Of course, many wanted, as they say now, to reform us, but it did not work out, although such huge efforts and funds were invested in the reformation of Russia."
5) How long this lunacy will go on is anyone's guess, and I suppose it would be funnier if it wasn't so terribly sad...
This and other statements here: actualidadereligiosa.blogspot.com/2022/02/war-in…
1) I have mentioned before how there seems to be an
- occasionally tense - dialogue between Pope Francis and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The letter from the Pope to the UGCC synod, which is taking place in Poland, is a case in point.
2) The key passage seems to me to be this: "I unite myself spiritually to your suffering, assuring you of my prayers and my commitment, which not infrequently, because of the delicate situation, does not emerge in the media."
3) Notice that last bit. The Pope is admitting that he would like to say more, but for diplomatic reasons he often doesn't. Almost like he's saying: "It's not that I'm not firmly on your side, I just can't say it openly".
1) Just added a handful of new statements by ++Shevchuk, of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, including ones in which he likens #Russia to the "apocalyptic beast that opens its mouth on modern man" and suggests it worships Mammon.
2) To Ukrainian refugees in #Poland: "Pray for the Ukrainian State, which today shelters Europe with its breast from the war that is destroying #Ukraine. Pray that evil does not spread, that Ukraine itself, with its holiness, strength, ability to sacrifice even life in faith for
3) the sake of God's truth and the salvation of man, will be a shield that will cover the whole world from the apocalyptic beast that opens its mouth on modern man."
1) Metropolitan Epiphanius celebrated a liturgy at the Cossack Tombs, during which he evoked all Ukrainian Martyrs, past and present. There were some very strong words in his sermon which are worth looking at.
2) "Like grain, these confessors of faith fell into the ground, but their feat, like an ear that sprouted from the grain, bore great fruit. This fruit is our church independence and our state independence.
Thanks to the feats of the best sons and daughters of our people, we have
3) the opportunity to pray in our native Church in our native language, we have the opportunity to build our state, and not live in the slave yoke of the «Russian world»."
1) Just published this excerpt of Letter from Patriarch Bartholomew to Pope Francis on the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul.
"How precious the testimony of the two Apostles by the incarnation of the Gospel principle of non-violence is to us today, when the whole world suffers at
2) this time from the political, economic, and ecological consequences of war at the door of Europe between two Christian peoples, resulting from the illegal invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. The Churches cannot remain silent in the face of this tragedy of humanity.
3) Called to be peacemakers, under no circumstances can they use religious language to justify or support aggression, violence, or war. On the contrary, they should support all initiatives and efforts to prevent conflicts through dialogue, which transforms all threats into
1) Just added another series of statements by Major Archbishop Shevchuk, of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
One thing, however, caught my eye.
On 27/6 he referred to the war as "insane". Here is the full quote
2) "War is the greatest crime against God. War is the greatest madness, the greatest stupidity a person can commit. We feel that Ukraine's enemies are those who do not allow it to fulfil its sacred vocation. That is why their insane plans, which rebel against God's plan
3) and vocation for our people, are doomed to shameful failure."
Now, it's not everyday you hear a religious leader describe something as "insane", which is why it rung a bell.
You see only two days later, 29/6 Pope Francis, who has never used the word before, used it as well.
1) Just published three more recent statements by Pope Francis on the war in Ukraine.
On 29/6 he called for an end to this "insane" war.
But the most important was yesterday, in his message to the delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, that visited him in Rome.
2) "Reconciliation among separated Christians, as a means of contributing to peace between peoples in conflict, is a most timely consideration these days, as our world is disrupted by a cruel and senseless war of aggression in which many, many Christians are fighting one another"
3) "How much suffering has been endured by those who have lost their loved ones and been forced to abandon their homes and their own country!"
