Right now, the House Judiciary Committee is having a hearing on "the Threat to Individual Freedoms in a Post-Roe World." Our liberties are at stake. Watch and listen here: judiciary.house.gov/calendar/event…
Chairman Nadler makes it clear: conservative judicial activists on the Supreme Court are threatening our arc towards progress and collective freedom. Under the reasoning of the Dobbs decision, other individual freedoms are under attack.
Of course Rep. Jordan (1) cites the Court's opinion cabining the impact to the right to abortion as though they didn't pull the same bait and switch with the ACA birth control cases, (2) mischaracterizes WHPA, and (3) cries about people being upset with the Justices.
Did he forget the leader of his party encouraged treason, inciting white supremacists to storm the Capitol, and he's upset that citizens are exercising their constitutional right to protest peacefully? Sir.
While Rep. Jordan spreads misinformation, let me talk about the Women's Health Protection Act, H.R. 8296, which @LambdaLegal is proud to support. The House will have a vote on WHPA (again!) on Friday.
WHPA works toward a future where all of us are free to make the personal decisions that shape our lives, our futures, and our families, without political interference, because #AbortionIsEssential health care that should be accessible to all.
WHPA allows healthcare providers to provide abortion services free from regs that are more burdensome than those imposed on comparable medical procedures, do not significantly advance reproductive health or the safety of abortion, & make abortion services more difficult to access
Tell Congress: The time to #ActForAbortionAccess is NOW, vote YES on #WHPA. bit.ly/2PdwbzN
It's important to understand the history of the 14th Amendment. @ProfMMurray explains it was drafted to eradicate the social & civil aspects of slavery: being unable to marry, to control one's reproductive destiny, or to raise one's family. There's no freedom without these rights
HRC's @SarahWarbelow makes the threat to LGBTQ+ folks clear. States are already passing bills & are chomping at the bit to send up test cases to overturn Lawrence or Obergefell. Congress must pass necessary democracy reform along with WHPA and the Equality Act to protect rights.
Catherine Foster is calling for a hearing on supporting American families & touts Republican leadership on the subject during the REAGAN era. Where have they been since? States w/ the most restrictive abortion policies have the fewest supportive policies. evaluatingpriorities.org
The impact of Dobbs could be vast. @JimObergefell shares his beautifully sad story of the last days of his marriage and Ohio's disregard of it. Families are harmed if states do not recognize marriages: medical decisions, adoptions, financial considerations, the list goes on.
Marriage equality, like abortion, is also an economic justice issue. No one should have to cross state lines, employ attorneys, and expend untold costs to access the same rights as folks in other states. Constitutional rights are not meant to be a patchwork.
The claim that Dobbs is cabined to abortion is "nonsensical," says @ProfMMurray. Not only does J. Thomas's concurrence provide the target list of the next set of rights to eradicate, but this is how precedent works. Dobbs will be the building block to reason more rights away.
Rep. Chabot thinks Congress should be focused on economic issues. Abortion IS an economic issue. Contraception IS an economic issue. Marriage IS an economic issue. When folks aren't able to control their own reproductive lives or enjoy marriage benefits, there are financial costs
Crisis Pregnancy Centers are fraudulent facilities. They draw in pregnant people with misleading advertisements to delay or even prevent these people from having an abortion. They are predators.
"It would not be the first time someone offered freedom for me but not for thee." - @ProfMMurray's response to @RepHankJohnson's comment about J. Thomas's omittance of Loving from his list of cases the Court should revisit. This is tyrannical.
Rep. Fischbach and other Republicans keep talking about abortion as though only women access it. Yes, abortion bans impact ciswomen and is rooted in misogyny, patriarchy, and white supremacy. It is also true that trans men and nonbinary people access abortion. Be inclusive.
.@RepCohen's line of questioning makes it clear we cannot separate Loving from Obergefell. The right to same-sex marriage is intertwined with the right to interracial marriages.
I really cannot understand how conservatives are able to say with a straight face that they believe in the sanctity of life while also supporting the death penalty, opposing expanding Medicaid, supporting policies that can lead to LGBTQ+ suicide ideation, and opposing paid leave.
"You know what states' rights are? Hanging Black people." Rep. @JacksonLeeTX18

Some states do NOT believe in equal rights. We fought a civil war & enacted 3 constitutional amendments b/c of states' rights. SCOTUS has been whittling away at the power of them. It's white supremacy
We need to pass democracy reform, expand SCOTUS, enact ethics rules for Justices, and pass WHPA and the Equality Act to address SCOTUS's onslaught on the Reconstruction Amendments. And it starts with reforming the filibuster in the Senate. lambdalegal.org/blog/us_202207…
In case the link between democracy reform and abortion/LGBTQ+ rights isn't clear, let Professor Khiara Bridges break it down for you.

Prof. Khiara Bridges was invited to speak at a similar hearing held by the Senate Judiciary Committee. There she confronted Senator Hawley, who dismissed the existence of trans and nonbinary people in the abortion context.
Wow. Matt Gaetz is really trying to get same-sex couples on board with abortion bans because it will lead to more children available for adoption.

He is despicable. Forced pregnancy is NOT an ethical way to provide adoption services. I cannot believe I have to say this.
Managerial duties call. Y'all keep watching this important hearing. Our individual freedoms are on the ballot in 2022. Vote. Protest. Demand better. Demand a Supreme Court that centers the Constitution instead of political ideology. #ExpandTheCourt
