Looks like Erdogan will move ahead with his military operation in northern #Syria despite Khamenei advising against it. Putin and Raisi are trying to influence the scope and score some points of their own.
During the summit, Erdogan acknowledged that Iran and Russia understand Turkey's concerns, but said more than words are needed. He said Turkey will continue its war against terrorist organizations in Syria and won't need anyone's support.
Both Putin and Raisi said Syria will be better off without foreign intervention and it looks like they're talking about the US and Israel.
Both backed the Astana format as an effective way of reducing violence in Syria, esp in Idlib, and helping with the refugee situation.
Interesting points from the joint statement of the presidents:
- They vowed to combat terrorism "in all forms" together, but "rejected all attempts to create new realities on the ground under the pretext of combating terrorism".
- They condemned continued military attacks on Syrian soil by #Israel, which they recognized as "violating international law" and Syria's territorial integrity.
- They rejected all unilateral sanctions, and called on UN and others to provide assistance "without politicization".
