For everyone coming to #AIDS2022, the Canadian gov't has reintroduced mandatory random arrivals testing.
The process will likely be convoluted for people staying in hotels as kits will need to be shipped to you or maybe can get one at airport and then returned somehow.
(sorry)
Most people attending #AIDS2022 will be flying into YUL/Montreal Airport.
I contacted Biron (the federal testing contractor in Quebec) and there are 3 options for testing.
1) At airport 2) Locations in Montreal where nurse will take swab 3) Shipping self-collection swab.
2/x
The Biron representative said that testing at YUL should continue for the next two weeks which would include folks arriving for the conference.
So if chosen, could just do test there and will get results in 24h.
If no longer there or wait too long (or tired), options 2/3.
3/x
Can use locations around Montreal where a nurse will take swab and you get results within 24 hours.
Can find those spots via website below but they seem distributed across the city with varying hours by site (these are pharmacies).
If sticking around for a few days, call Biron and they will use service to ship out a self-collection kit.
This will arrive within 1-3 business days via Purolator and use Switch Health (ASMO) website to do testing on camera.
Kit gets picked up or dropped off at Purolator.
5/x
The way you will know that you were chosen is either you get a pink sticker (says PHAC) put on your passport or will get email from Quarantine - COVID 19 - Quarantaine <quarantine.covid.19.quarantaine@notification.canada.ca>.
They use the email that you used in arrivecan.
6/x
It is your responsibility to get this testing done with very limited support or guidance by the government.
You likely could even exit Canada without having done the testing, but could put you in violation and make it hard to enter again (if you ever want to).
7/x
Most Canadians realize this does nothing to protect Canada and likely has to do with federal contracts worth billions of dollars.
That doesn't change the requirement for now for those attending #AIDS2022.
I believe @iasociety will pull together more info for attendees.
Fin.
Last thing--as a consolation, you do not need to quarantine while waiting for results.
But yes, if testing positive, have to isolate for 5 days (don't know exact number of days for Quebec) and may not be able to leave Canada during this time.

We published a commentary in @CMAJ suggesting that early data showed #COVID19 in Canada was marked by heterogeneity in risks of infection, spread and severity across people, places and time.
Just a FYI that one can be very pro-vaccination and appreciate that immunity from infection is real.
Thoughts: 1) No sane folks seek to be infected 2) Immune system is more than a few antibodies 3) Downplaying infection-derived immunity is an unnecessary battle that burns trust.
Stay with me and let's think through some logistics.

(I'm not gonna edit as need to do kiddo bedtime stuff...but just to say, anyone who thinks this is easy has not really thought about that much at all)
Entering business
Does business scan your passport at the front door? If so, do they place an employee by the front door? If not, is the door locked and then unlocked via QR code? If so, does it only allow one person in at a time? If not, do they have a person watching?
2/x
If it is a restaurant, maybe the host does it before seating you? And if self-seating, then maybe waiter does it at the table? So they just eye ball it or do they need to scan something? Do they scan each person or just one person? Do they also check matching photo ID?

Some positions are on the tenure-track and some are not even if they carry the same title.
The key difference is that there is a pathway to tenure which represents an indefinite academic appointment where one can only get fired for extraordinary reasons.

Affiliate faculty
Affiliate faculty normally have 1ary employment outside of university to which they are affiliated.
Affiliates often play a specific role like teaching/research and may derive a salary associated with that affiliation with rank set by 1ary employer.

There are few "truths" in public health, but the following include those I have observed in quantitative & qualitative studies, community engagement, and program implementation independent of socioeconomic or geographic contexts.
In the immediate term, you cannot educate someone out of being hungry or needing a place to sleep.
Given a choice between clean and dirty needle, someone will always want to inject with a clean one.
I want to document grave concerns with vaccine passports
TL:DR
Inequitable global vaccine distribution combined with immunity passports suggests to me unidirectional travel in the future for people from higher income settings into lower income ones challenging development.
Disclosures: 1) For the last ~15 years, I have been travelling internationally about 200 days per year. 2) I love working with people from all over the world and am incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity
LMIC - Low and middle income country
HIC - High income country

Assumptions: 1) It will take ~3 years to vaccinate everyone who would need to travel 2) Countries will choose to vaccinate elderly first who are less likely to travel for economic or educational opportunities 3) Vaccine passports may require boosters further pushing timeline
