Here's my @pozmagazine report on the @NEJM#monkeypox study. Other reports have covered the key findings, but I'll note for the #HIV audience that 41% of cases were HIV+. The good news is that they did not have worse outcomes. poz.com/article/study-…
"Whilst people with HIV account for more than 40% of cases so far, it is reassuring that HIV status was not linked with monkeypox severity,” said @drlaurajwaters, chair of the @BritishHIVAssoc.
The proportion of HIV+ people in this case series appears higher than HIV rates among men who have sex with men overall. It's not clear if HIV might be associated with greater monkeypox susceptibility, though it seems possible that immunosuppression could play a role.
Among those who were HIV- or unknown status, nearly 60% were on #PrEP. Integrating monkeypox, HIV & STI prevention, testing, vaccination & treatment sounds like a great approach -- & we need to fund sexual health services!
Right-wingers & homophobes were making such accusations before #monkeypox & they always will. We need to communicate accurately about risk based on the latest epidemiological evidence & get resources to the people who need them most.
I haven’t seen any PH official, scientists, doctors or mainstream media calling it a “gay disease.” They are saying the vast majority of cases so far are among gay, bi & other men who have sex with men.
Everyone knows -- or should know -- that gay people have family members (including children), housemates & others with whom they may have prolonged close personal contact that doesn't involve sex.
OMG! @HumaneSociety starts accepting some of the 4,000 research beagles rescued from the closed Envigo breeding lab. So small! I hope one of them has my name on it... @beaglefreedom
Here's my @aidsmap report on the @NEJM#monkeypox study. A remarkable effort by a large team of collaborators, including community members -- exactly how research & public health should be done. 1/ aidsmap.com/news/jul-2022/…
Of the 528 cases described, there were no women & no children (as far as I can tell). But the outbreak has since exploded, with 15,848 cases reported to date. Several dozen cases in women & a few cases in children have now been reported. 2/ cdc.gov/poxvirus/monke…
The study includes a wealth of information about #monkeypox transmission (mostly sexual), symptoms (some not previously described) & treatment (which remains limited). I've done too many long tweet threads lately, so you'll just have to read my report.🙂 3/
.@kakape urges against "dramatization" of #monkeypox -- it's bad enough as it it. If MPX were airborne, "we wouldn't be seeing the kind of pattern we are seeing."
.@KrutikaKuppalli says if we don’t have equity in access to #monkeypox diagnostics, vaccines & therapeutics, we're going to have the same problem we’re seeing with COVID. "We need global solidarity."
If you look at #monkeypox in endemic countries in Africa (where it’s hasn’t been spreading like an STD), the 2003 US prairie dog-related outbreak & sporadic travel-related cases, you can see that the virus doesn’t spread very easily from person to person.
During the US outbreak when nearly 50 people got monkeypox from prairie dogs, there were no known cases of human-to-human transmission. And you don’t see it ripping through schools in African countries. academic.oup.com/jid/article/19…
#Monkeypox is not solely a sexually transmitted infection, but it does spread especially easily & rapidly within gay/bi/MSM sexual networks. Based on historical precedent, this kind of transmission does not appear likely in other settings.
My latest #monkeypox article featuring some eagerly awaited demographic data from @SF_DPH. SF reports 141 cases. Nearly all (97.7%) cisgender men, with the rest (2.3%) identifying as trans men. No women (cis or trans) & no one under 18 so far. @eBARnews
Nearly half are white (47.7%), somewhat exceeding their share of the city’s population. Black men (7.0%) also slightly overrepresented. Latino men account for 29.1% of cases -- nearly double their share of the population. Only 5.8% are Asian, far below their population share.
HIV status wasn't reported, but in to more detailed analyses from @UKHSA & @ECDC_EU, around 25% to 40% are living with HIV & many of the HIV-negative men are using PrEP.
