NEW: A spokesman for Colorado GOP Senate candidate @ODeaForColorado said a newly-introduced bipartisan bill to restore federal protections for abortion and contraception is a "positive step" but said it needed additional restrictions to earn his support. #copolitics #cosen
Senators Kaine, Sinema, Collins and Murkowski are sponsors of the Reproductive Freedom For All Act , which would codify abortion rights and access to contraception. nytimes.com/2022/08/01/us/…
O'Dea spokesman Joshua Marin-Mora called the bill a "good start" on a issue where O'Dea has broken with many in the GOP. "It's a positive step," Marin-Mora told 9NEWS. "Joe thinks we need to find common ground and move forward and this is clearly a good faith attempt to do that."
"Joe thinks a woman's right to choose should be protected early in pregnancy and in medical emergencies," Marin-Mora said. "This bill does that. And he likes that the bill protects religious hospitals."
"With limits on elective late term abortion, reaffirming the Hyde Amendment, and parental notification for minors, Joe would support this," Marin-Mora said. "This framework is a good start."
The bill would allow states to enact "reasonable restrictions on post-viability abortions" but does not address the Hyde Amendment (funding for abortion) or parental notification.
While Sen Kaine described the bill as codifying Roe, Democratic Sen Elizabeth Warren said she did not believe it would codify Roe as she announced her opposition. The bill likely does not have a path to 60 votes and passage. nbcnews.com/meet-the-press…

NEW: Five of Colorado's most-prominent former Democratic elected officials are condemning their party's meddling to elevate extremist Republicans in GOP primaries. #copolitics issueone.org/articles/polit…
The anti-meddling letter, organized by the centrist group Issue One, was signed by Fmr Gov Roy Romer, Fmr Sen Gary Hart, Fmr Sen Mark Udall, and Fmr Sen Tim Wirth, and Fmr Rep Pat Schroeder. It was first reported by Politico. politico.com/news/2022/08/0…
The letter said elevating election deniers is risky and unethical. "We must stop this practice, and stop today... Our democracy is fragile, therefore we cannot tolerate political parties attempting to prop up candidates whose message is to erode our dedication to fair elections."

NEW: Douglas County Commissioner suggests seizing land from Denver in retaliation for the city's gun control laws. A 2-1 vote by the Republican commissioners directs the county attorney to study the possibility of seizing 1,000-acre Daniels Park. #copolitics
I'm putting together a report on this for #HeyNext at 6pm and I'll be back to thread details here when I have a moment.
Daniels Park is one of 22 parks in the Denver Mountain Parks system, land long owned by the city in other counties along the Front Range. Daniels Park's 1,000 acres were given to the city between 1920 and 1937. denvergov.org/Government/Age…

NEW: Colorado Republican powerbroker Joe Oltmann, who called for mass hangings of political opponents, has issued a new call to seize control of the US government. Oltmann referenced the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrate, an idea promoted by religious extremists. #copolitics
Oltmann, whose influential group FEC United collected signed loyalty pledges from GOP candidates, directed followers to “warrior up,” writing, “Restoration requires you to tear it down, without permission.”
Oltmann has called for the hangings of US Senators by name and suggested CO Gov Jared Polis should be hanged. Oltmann was the source of the baseless claim that Denver-based Dominion Voting Systems conspired with Antifa to rig the 2020 election.

NEW: Colorado's Catholic bishops tell Catholic state legislators who voted for abortion access to "voluntarily refrain from receiving Holy Communion" until they offer "public repentance." #coleg #copolitics
"The burden from their decision does not rest upon the shoulders of priests, deacons or lay Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. It rests upon the consciences and souls of those politicians who have chosen to support this evil and unjust law," the public letter read in part.
The letter, dated June 6, says most of the Catholic legislators who voted in favor of abortion access were unwilling to meet with church leaders.

You’re right, Roger, one political group in Colorado is overrepresented in the #HeyNext audience. But it’s Unaffiliated voters (50%+ of the Next audience vs 44.8% active voters). #copolitics
Our recent research indicates registered Democrats and Republicans are each underrepresented in the Next audience by about 2-3%. I know that you, as an elected official, base your views on research and evidence as opposed to hunches, so I hope this is interesting and useful info.
And I should note, the political makeup of the show’s audience doesn’t make Next “good” or “bad” just as the fact that it’s the most-watched local newscast doesn’t make it “good” or “bad.” Numbers are just numbers.
