🧵: 2 years on from the Beirut port explosion, Lebanon is still reeling from the disaster; families are denied justice and the political elite remain in place.
On the night of the explosion, hospitals took thousands of patients in for free, but long-term treatments for injuries and wounds require significant financial means.
With Lebanon's ongoing economic crisis, the majority of its population struggle to afford even basic healthcare
With the call for justice, political leaders and high-ranking officials called in for questioning refused to answer to courts.
Some even filed lawsuits against the judge in charge. In December, investigations were suspended until the complaints can be processed
“I woke up on the floor. I could taste blood in my mouth, but I didn’t feel pain. I thought I was dead," - Ritta Hanna, whose life changed that day.
The shock wave from the blast threw her to the ground and she was hit by rubble that came flying in from the port
“When the families of the dead, the families of those who are lost, understand what happened, and are convinced with the explanation, only that will bring us comfort,” Faten Hamwi, who was out in Beirut on the day of the blast, told MEE middleeasteye.net/video/beirut-b…
Model Marie-Therese said some brands refused to work with her following the explosion, because of scars on her legs, but others started picking her because of her story middleeasteye.net/news/beirut-ex…
Marie survived, miraculously after pieces of glass and stone cut though her flesh and severed the artery behind her right knee.
Little incidents bring her back to 4 August, when her apartment in Beirut collapsed on itself
Sharing her experiences and recovery on social media has also helped Marie-Therese accept her new self.
While some victims have come to terms with the physical effects of the port blast, there is still widespread anger that no one has been brought to justice
Veteran Israeli analyst, Meron Rapoport, tells MEE 👇

But then, "Israel puts tens of thousands of residents in the areas adjacent to Gaza under curfew on the grounds that Islamic Jihad is planning a response...
Then kills senior members of the group in Gaza, as well as civilians, on the grounds that they planned to attack Israel"
