Welcome to #CrossBorderRail DE-PL extra day 1 - Berlin to Kostryzn and Zielona Gora twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
Here’s today’s route map
#CrossBorderRail Train 152
RB 26 (5159) 09:33 Berlin Ostkreuz - Küstrin Kietz 10:48
Ave speed: 64 km/h
Operator: Niederbarniner Eisenbahn (NEB) - Captrain group

Train type: PESA Link
⛽️
🚲: ✅
🦽: ✅ (step free but platform too high at Ostkreuz)
📶: ⛔️
🍽: ⛔️
Leaving the Plattenbau behind
A few remarks on this PESA Link DMU. It’s very similar in layout to a Siemens Desiro Classic

Its interior design is less clever - esp luggage racks are smaller and less well designed. However the ride quality is smoother, the gear changes from the mechanical transmission better
Sachsen 1, Berlin-Brandenburg 0

#9euroticket works to the first stations in Czechia across the border from Sachsen. Between Berlin-Brandenburg and Poland you have to buy an extra ticket - €2,10
How do I choose?! 😜

Polenmarkt Küstrin or Küstriner Polenmarkt?
Pull down seats in door vestibule areas are a bad idea, esp on regional trains. The train is empty now - there are plenty of seats in regular seating areas - but two lazy passengers are still making the entry and exit of others complicated.
Bridges over the Oder

Küstrin 🇩🇪 to the left
Kostryzn 🇵🇱 to the right

Road bridge in the foreground, construction of the new rail bridge behind

#CrossBorderRail
Have you expanded that book writing business to hotels and tobacco @BastonBorders 😜 (it’s actually Bastion. But it’s close enough!)
Kostrzyn station. Charming brick building, well renovated. Tracks on two levels (lower level north-south, upper level east-west)
#CrossBorderRail Train 153
TLK 82102 13:34 Kostrzyn - Zielona Gora 14:39
Ave speed: 95 km/h
Operator: PKP Intercity

Train type: EU07 locomotive & 6 elderly carriages inc. 5 #fensterauf
⚡️
🚲: ✅ (but narrow doors)
🦽: ⛔️
📶: ⛔️

Ouch. Just crossed the Graz/Budapest/Wroclaw train at Rzepin. It’s running 6 hours late today! 😳 (times for Frankfurt (Oder) shown)
Zielona Gora
And off go today’s postcards to @AdinaValean and 1 of the supporters of my project
#CrossBorderRail Train 154
RB 77237 / RB 5618 16:50 Zielona Góra Główna - Guben 18:13
Ave speed: 47 km/h
Operator: Polregio for Lubuskie

Train type: Pesa Link DMU
⛽️
🚲: ✅
🦽: ✅ (step free if platform allows)
📶: ⛔️

Passing a train transporting military trailers at Wężyska - the military transport was heading west. Signs on equipment elsewhere on board (not shown in this video) were in English.
Earlier in the convoy
Damn Zielona Góra Główna - Guben is a slow train. I get why this line was out of action for passenger trains a long time. The line is straight and on flat terrain - increasing the speed from the current 40-50km/h to 100-120km/h would not be hard! #CrossBorderRail
The Guben - Zielona Góra Główna train departs Guben, as the drone flies above the Neiße
Guben. It’s seen better days
And here’s the kiosk from the postcards ;-)
#CrossBorderRail Train 155
RB 11 (18320) 19:44 Guben - Frankfurt (Oder) 20:26
Ave speed: 69 km/h
Operator: @db_bahn

Train type: Bombardier Talent 2 EMU
⚡️
🚲: ✅
🦽: ✅ (step free - level-ish boarding, slopes inside)
📶: ⛔️

Guben station
#CrossBorderRail Train 156
RE 1 (3192) 20:34 Frankfurt (Oder) - Berlin Ostkreuz 21:22
Ave speed: 98 km/h
Operator: @db_bahn

Train type: @siemensmobility Taurus & Bombardier double deck carriages
⚡️
🚲: ✅
🦽: ✅ (step free - level-ish boarding, slopes inside)

Golden hour
This is the Neiße rail bridge Guben 🇩🇪 (to the left) to Gubin 🇵🇱

It was interesting to go here today, but I’m asking myself what the #CrossBorderRail potential is here? The line, Polish side, is such low speed… This is more a Polish project than an international one

I’ve just been invited to an event in Herceg Novi, Montenegro 🇲🇪 in October

Even by my standards this is 🤯 by train (and bus, or ferry)
I have these options:

1) Train to Split (RegioJet and the EuroNight from Wien have already stopped for the season, so change in Zagreb necessary), then a long bus ride
2) Train Zagreb-Slavonski Brod, then bus to Sarajevo. Stay over with friends there. Then the new international Talgo train Sarajevo-Ploce, then a slightly shorter bus to Herceg Novi

I’m as much of a supporter of night trains as anyone...

… but let’s not get carried away here

This @euronewstravel piece about London to Stockholm in a day by @CharlotteElton is not quite right

The thread will explain why

euronews.com/travel/2022/08…
“Combined with existing Eurostar services, it will cut train travel time between Stockholm and London to roughly one day.”

Combined with Eurostar *and 2 Deutsche Bahn trains* - so 4 trains total! - it’s doable
“The train is powered by renewables energy”

I think it’s renewable energy

And what about the energy the rest of the trip uses?

Welcome to the 3rd August #CrossBorderRail extra day - exploring the DE-PL-CZ borders near Görlitz and Liberec twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
#CrossBorderRail Train 146
IC 2173 08:33 Berlin Südkreuz - Dresden Neustadt 10:29
Ave speed: 105 km/h
Operator: @db_bahn

Train type: Class 101 locomotive & InterCity carriages
⚡️
🚲: ✅
🦽: ✅ (needs a ramp or lift)
📶: ⛔️
🍽: ❓
(I’m a bit confused here - I thought this was meant to be a Stadler ex-WESTbahn EMU. And then the issue of course is: if it’s a replacement train, does it have the same features, at least in terms of accessibility?)

This is a thread about media management, and what I have learned about it from running #CrossBorderRail

All the three of the cases here are from international English language printed and online press - and quite prestigious ones
Case 1

I contact someone I have known for years who’s the Europe Correspondent of the paper about the project

“I’ll get back to you once back from holiday”

They do not not, I contact them again

“You need to speak to X - I’ll make introductions”
Person I know emails me, CCing X who does commissioning, I reply and explain my project and what sort of articles could work

No reply, it goes dead

Welcome to Day 40 #CrossBorderRail Bratislava - Wien - Liberec - Berlin. The final day of the main project! twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
So that wasn’t the best video start to the day - bombed by a wasp at Bratislava!

But the cycle to the station took me past this - the Slovak Radio Building 😍
Bratislava hl. st.

And a kebab baguette? No I didn’t partake
