Another superb episode of ⁦#Newscast with @adamfleming@chrismason and special guest ⁦@PippaCrerar⁩ who’s just taken up the job of political editor at the ⁦@guardian⁩. One of the best ever. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0…
The ambient traffic noise which you can hear as it’s recorded in college green, a park adjacent to Westminster is a nice touch making it feel both intimate and very real, a great strength of this broadcasting marvel.
Bit sorry not to have some @bbclaurak and @BBCkatyaadler in there, but three voices may well be the magic number for these things.
This “Westminster Picnic” edition addresses the last year and is predicated on the idea that the Tory leadership contest and the new Govt formation that will follow in early September will begin a new year in UK politics.
And what a year it has been. The show covers the big issues in politics of the 12 month period, beginning with Owen Patterson lobbying scandal which broke at COP26 while I was there and featured a particular bizarro press conference with Boris full of rugby metaphors.
It was a UK media only presser, which was a little annoying given that the UK was holding the presidency- and notable for barely addressing #climateChange. Afterwards Boris who had flown up for it promptly headed (scurried?) back to London to address his demons.
Soon after the #PartyGate story which ultimately led to his downfall broke in a story from @PippaCrerar, that would ultimately lead to @BorisJohnson’s premature downfall nearly a year later,
After discussing the inside journalism story of Party Gate’s genesis, the show pivots to the Ukraine War in which the UK had been so embroiled, and which @BorisJohnson had probably hoped would save his premiership.
Which it probably would have in most countries, certainly the US, but there are special properties in Westminster style politics which are also evident in NZ and Australian politics which I think are related to the traditions of Parlt. news coverage adopted from the UK.
Their discussion of the Ukraine War does not address the nature and impact of the “special relationship” with the US which is a subject that UK Media choose not to dwell on much, probably because it makes Britain look a smaller than it would like.
Next up is the “cost of living crisis” aka rampant energy shock driven inflation which appears now set to push the UK into a deep recession.

Followed by a recap of the demise of @BorisJohnson’s lies about the issues @PippaCrerar raised in late 2021 finally caught up with him.
In a sense this can all be summed up in the old aphorism: “If at first you set out to deceive, oh what a tangled web you will weave.”

Which I think pretty much sums up all of the world’s current ills.
Truth really matters. Especially in politics and international relations. And when it is willfully discarded, or spun, for political reasons it sets in motion a pathological process which all too often leads to disaster.
It would be good if this simple understanding about the importance of faithfulness to truth in high office had a Renaissance for us all.

And the rise and fall of @BorisJohnson 2016-2022 provides us with a great object lesson to remind us of this.

@SecBlinken @StateDept My thread yesterday on the very recent US announcement of its internal reorganisation and new high level strategy pivot on Africa which is being officially unveiled in South Africa today.
. @USAmbUN Ambassdor @LindaT_G has also been visiting Africa and getting herself in a bit of a pickle - by telling African Nations that they can purchase Russian food and fertiliser but warning them they will face sactions if they break Ukraine sanctions.

A ceasefire announcement r.e. Gaza today. Which is very welcome. It is good that @IsraeliPM and @IDF have come to their senses. The civilian death toll in Gaza including children had reached 40. With hundreds injured.

Israel has reopened crossings allowing fuel in. BBC reports that hospitals were about to run out of electricity prior to the ceasefire.
The ceasefire was likely brokered by Egypt, and an important factor according to BBC was high levels of "International presure".

Two points in reply.

1. Residents of Gaza can’t go to work in Israel because they are surrounded by a fence manned by armed guards with orders to shoot to kill.
3. Israel knew this engineered provocation and bombing operation would kill children, this is a a crime against the law, the law of Israel, and the law of God.

There are protests all around the world about the latest Israeli attacks on Gaza.

This time the bombing began with an @IDF first strike, which Israel claimed was preemptive, against a planned attack.
Israel also anticipated a “heavy rocket fire” response which is now being used by international allies who have issued public statements defending Israel’s right to defend itself.
Israel asserted the right to bomb and kill its neighbor’s children because it thought it was about to be attacked.

After the neighbour retaliated by lobbing rockets at their US air defence system as expected, Israel feels justified in killing as many children as is needed….

The death toll as a result of this “pre-emptive” attack on Gaza yesterday is climbing rapidly including at least six children with many more horribly injured.
Yesterday the @IDF spokesman said the IDF wanted not to “drag” Hamas into its conflict with Islamic Jihad.

But also said it expected “major rocket fire”.

The major rocket fire has started & Hamas has not joined in yet.

Meanwhile Israel says it’s attacks will last a week. Image
Predictable reflexive statements affirming Israel’s right to defend itself have been issued in the US by @SenatorMenendez and the UK by @trussliz UK Foreign Sec and would be PM.

But this time Israel is not defending itself. It struck first, pre-emptively.

This is pure opportunistic murder. And unprecedented.

Attacking a city full of civilians to pre-empt anticipated attacks.

New @IsraeliPM @yairlapid could face war crime charges over this.

Piling provocation upon humiliation upon provocation upon humiliation for months to satiate the blood lust of Israeli extremists and settlers appears to now be SOP in Israel.

This is as corrupt an approach security ad anyone could imagine. But it is now normal.
Now that Hamas is no longer taking the bait to justify some ritualistic slaughter of children via fire from the sky, Israel appears to have decided to find a new target for its provocation operations.
