16 yrs ago today, the US-led invasion of Iraq began. All this time later, we’re still stuck in two seemingly endless wars. As I recently laid out, our troops & our nation deserve better. There are so many steps we can take to ensure our military remains the strongest in the world
Despite the President’s latest proposal, we can’t just keep throwing together huge defense budgets every year & think that’s enough.
Our power abroad stems from our strength here on U.S. soil. It’s past time we recognize that funding our domestic priorities—like education, healthcare and green energy—actually bolsters our national security.

Chris Stark, @theCCCuk, says this is a 'crunch moment' for the CCC, thanks to renewed interest in climate change and #NetZero emissions, ahead of the Committee's forthcoming advice to Government on the UK's long-term #climatechange targets, due out on 2 May 2019 #UKClimateAction
Chris takes us back to 2008, and the CCC's initial advice to Government which was commensurate with keeping global temps to below 2degsC - an 80% reduction in emissions below 1990 levels - which Parliament agreed. But 'a great deal has changed' since then he adds #UKClimateAction
"We have to stop burning fossil fuels or start sequestering carbon, or both," says @ChiefExecCCC, and we "are now on the clock". If not, "we risk locking in a set of emissions that will not be easily unwound. The impacts are now really upon us," he adds #TowardsNetZero

This is one of the most shocking cases of #climatesilence we've ever seen.

@adeelnyt writes an entire article in the @nytimes about the context of the #NebraskaFloods and fails to mention climate change even once.

Newsflash! The midwestern floods from the bomb cyclone ARE linked to climate change.

@gaarder in her @OWHnews article made those links clear, quoting both James Hansen and @MichaelEMann. She is a model to reporters everywhere.

Hassan wasn't the only @nytimes reporter who failed to mention climate change.

@mihirzaveri wrote an entire piece veritably humming with #climatesilence.

I don't hack on tech in my spare time.

I have 5 kids

And a wife

And family

And friends

And a house to maintain

And my health

And other hobbies I don't have time for

Why would I spend my time doing what I do at work outside of work?
FYI this tweet was partly in response to a number of tech people tweeting about things like (paraphrasing) "I'm going to play with k8s on the plane" and "I'm going to spend the weekend learning rust"...

We have one life.

Get out from behind screens sometimes and do other stuff
While you're here... I care about #ClimateChange

Data Centres cause more carbon emissions than the whole of the aviation industry

I was on a podcast at @qconlondon, talking about the huge effect Tech has on Climate Change:

Amazon, Microsoft, Google/Alphabet are all trying to get Oil companies to use their cloud and use compute/ML to extract oil more efficiently.

It's unethical and wrong.

As an industry, tech needs to recognise it's power and walk out for #climatechange

Maybe tech needs a #climatestrike too!

Maybe we're being shown exactly what to do by children.

The Economist article linked earlier in the thread suggests the same.

Well. This looks like confirmation of the existence of a positive feedback loop that may make it even harder to prevent extreme sea level rise, and all the other #climatechange extremes.

Not surprised, but very concerned. (Thread) unenvironment.org/news-and-stori…
...the thing about this new Arctic study is, it’s a clear example of how #climatechange can be worse than what we’ve been told.

Most studies show it is likely to be worse, as we continue to do this puzzle- putting the complex pieces together, with an ever uglier result. 2/3
In my own area of research, it turns out that including #groundwater in coastal #flooding projections can drastically expand the amount of area affected.

Not just by emergent flooding, but by remobilizing soil pollution we capped decades ago but didn’t line from below. 3/4

As a cishetero black woman, I will get excited about @JulianCastro running for president if a core part of his platform is black women's health outcomes, particularly our maternal mortality crisis.

Issues like police brutality & trans housing (important, no doubt) won't do it.💅
The days of getting me hyped up *solely* on issues that impact other marginalized groups or those that *disproportionately* impact black men won't work.

No more #MoralityMuling. As a loyal democratic voting group, we need a CLEAR, high priority in every campaign.

#NotYourMule
As far as I'm concerned, all of the current Democratic presidential candidates are all the same until they unapologetically make those in the likeness of MYSELF, black cishetero women, a top focus.

We've been carrying y'all for too long with LITTLE in return.

We're done.

#USA politicians support #Israel not out of allegiance or the power of lobbyists. Aspects of this support include:

1. Annual >$3b aid packages, with regular supplements & fewer restrictions than aid to other nations
2. Support of governments #Israel likes, such as #Jordan #KSA
#Egypt, regardless of #humanrights abuses
3. Undermining/attacking governments, groups & nations it dislikes: #Iraq #Iran #Lebanon
4. Ignoring obligations to #Palestinians under intl law
5. Allowing "charities" to receive tax-deductible donations used to further #ethniccleansing
in #Palestine.
6. Various state & federal government agencies with preferences to #Israel, such as #police exchanges & subsidized trade delegations.
7. Voting for legislation punishing people who support #BDS, a non-violent advocacy tactic.

I can’t wait for y’all to get to know @BetoORourke. Those of us here at Veterans for Beto were grassroots organizers for his Senate campaign last summer and fall. Those of us in our group know Beto as well as anyone, and our support for Beto has not wavered since the mid-term.
We’re #Texas #veterans, y’all. All of us wore the uniform (or were close to someone who did), we’re patriots, and we love Texas and our country. We’re also mostly pretty cynical about politics and politicians, which is why it’s remarkable how much we support @BetoORourke.
This veteran had never gotten off the couch to support any politician. But there I am, putting up road signs in September Texas heat. I personally knocked probably over 1,500 doors, and Vets for Beto thousands more. For @BetoORourke, I, and my colleagues, showed the fuck up.

1) National broadcaster @yleuutiset asked Finnish party heads about their security policy views (internal and external) - elections on April 14th - some thoughts on it:

Bottom line: Consensus is pretty broad on many issues.
2) there is some spread on whether current conscript/national service system should be changed. Interestingly some parties that frequently speak of #genderequality don't think it applies here. See potential opening for 'call up' for everyone but service still voluntary for women.
3) All parties oppose idea of easing sanctions placed on #Russia, due to ongoing war in #Ukraine.

--> This view will not change (even if individual parliamentarians sometimes flirt with the idea), it is too central to the position #Finland has staked out in EU.

This may be hard to swallow, but it's crucial re #ClimateChange so please hang in there:
- 56 million yrs ago the world experienced a mass extinction event so severe that nearly ALL LIFE in the oceans was destroyed. It's called the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM).
MORE
Cont/2
The PETM was caused by massive release of CO2 & GHGs into Earth's atmosphere, leading to heating and O2 depletion of the oceans. Life in the seas literally cooked & suffocated.

OK, you say, so why's that important now?

MORE
Cont/3
So? Here:
"we are now emitting carbon 9–10 Xs faster than during the PETM. If the present trend of ^ing carbon emissions continues, we may see PETM-magnitude #extinction & accelerated evolution in as few as 140 yrs or about 5 human generations."

I genuinely believe that some of the activists here on Twitter are more vested in belittling those with whom they disagree than they are in vote getting for candidates they support. It's as if they don't care as much about getting ppl to vote for "their" candidate as they do
making sure to put others down who disagree with their candidate. Only time will tell if they did more to ensure their candidate lost votes or won them.

Except for the fact it was well-timed to increase pressure on Wilson-Raybould to threaten Indigenous + Liberal relations
