NEW: Amazon workers at the BRS2 Site in Swindon have staged a walkout. I'm told workers at the BHX5 site in Rugby have also staged a walkout. Likely there will be more walkouts at other sites tonight as the dispute over pay escalates further.
Unofficial strike action began last week at the LCY2 Site in Tilbury over a proposed 35p pay rise described as 'insulting' and 'inadequate'. Across a number of sites, workers have been staging sit-ins in canteens in protest. A significant number have joined the GMB union.
NEW: Amazon workers at the LBA4 Site in Doncaster have now started a sit-in within the canteen over the current pay proposals.
I'm told Amazon workers at the BHX4 site in Coventry have also staged a sit-in within the canteen over the current pay proposals.
Amazon workers at the BRS1 site (Bristol) also staged a sit-in last night.
Looking to speak to Amazon workers who have taken part in mass walkouts over the current pay dispute. Can keep anonymous. DMs open or email in bio.
NEW: Soaring energy bills will put two-thirds of households (18 million) into fuel poverty in January next year according to a study by the University of York.
A fifth of households will be forced to spend a quarter of their net income on energy costs.
Worth noting that less than a fifth of households were in fuel poverty in 2019. That's doubled to two-fifths today and will reach two-thirds in January without urgent government intervention.
There is a clear link between fuel poverty and poor health. For older people, living in cold temperatures increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Respiratory diseases, including flu, are more common, as are falls, injuries, and hypothermia.
Workers in Britain have experienced the longest period of wage stagnation since the 1800s and now face further real-terms pay cuts amid the worst squeeze on living standards since the 1950s. Two-thirds of adults in poverty are now in a working household. We say #EnoughIsEnough
Tens of thousands have already signed up to support the campaign. Rallies will be taking place up and down the country. Do sign up if you haven't done so already!
Britain isn't simply a passive bystander; it's been actively complicit in the oppression of the Palestinian people. Six months before the 2014 assault on Gaza where over 2000 Palestinians were killed, Britain approved £7 million worth of arms sales to Israel.
In 2018, the IDF used live ammunition on peaceful protestors on the Gaza border, killing 189 Palestinians including 32 children. Britain shamefully abstained from a UN vote which condemned Israel for excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force against the demonstrators.
Just last year, Boris Johnson declared his opposition to an International Criminal Court investigation of Israeli actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, standing in the way of justice and enabling Israel to continue to act with impunity.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health says the number of Palestinians killed by the Israeli aggression on Gaza has climbed to 24, while 203 Palestinians have been wounded.
Two Palestinian brothers, 11-year-old Ahmed Al-Nairab and 5-year-old Momen Al-Nairab were amongst those killed in an Israeli airstrike on Northern Gaza this evening.
Israeli forces killed 11 Palestinians last night including 5-year-old Alaa Abdullah Riyad Qaddoum in an airstrike in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood of Gaza City. Alaa's father and six-year-old brother were injured in the same attack.
NEW: Over 1600 London bus drivers to strike on 19th and 20th August in pay dispute. @unitetheunion say the 3.4% offer represents a real-terms pay cut given RPI inflation stands at 11.8%. The strike on Friday 19th will coincide with tube and overground strike.
Statement from @UniteSharon: “The parent company RATP is fabulously wealthy and it can fully afford to pay our members a decent wage increase. Unite’s members play a crucial role in keeping London moving and they are not going to accept seeing their pay constantly eroded.”
“Unite does what it says on the trade union tin and always defends the jobs, pay and conditions of its members. Our members at London United will receive the union’s complete support until this dispute is resolved and a fair pay offer secured.”
