Taliban’s Rule: Evaluating One Year of Terror —— THREAD 🧵

In this long thread I analyze one years of Taliban rule based on various Int'l orgs, ground realities, & news reports which suggest that Taliban are more cruel than they were & are still a threat for global security. 1️⃣
The unfortunate events of August 2021 led to the takeover of AFG by one of the most dreaded terror groups of the world – the Taliban. After the takeover, Taliban claimed that they are now more moderate than their previous version and this time, they will not only build ... 2️⃣
... the nation by including all stakeholders but will also guarantee all basic human rights including women's education and their participation in public life. But in contrary, their one year-rule proved to be more brutal and stricter. 3️⃣
Besides they proved to be inefficient governors as AFG economy is in a downward trajectory since last August and the humanitarian crisis under their rule is only worsening. Also, they are still a big threat for regional as well as global security. 4️⃣
— Human Rights Abuses:
In the past year, the Taliban have committed countless crimes. #Taliban are also not able to control the whole of the AFG territory. In many northern parts of #Afghanistan, various groups are challenging the Taliban rule. Especially #Panjshir province ...5️⃣
... is central to this anti-Taliban armed resistance. The democratic and other progressive forces have joined hands in #Panjshir, Andarab district of Baghlan province, & several other northern areas of #Afghanistan & have put a tough armed resistance to the #Taliban. 6️⃣
Taliban are unable to tackle down resistance formed in the Panjshir & other northern areas & therefore, they have resorted to brutal tactics. They arbitrarily arrest & kill civilians. #Taliban fighters are raiding houses in search of Tajiks who hail from #Panjshir & Andarab. 7️⃣
Hundreds of Panjshiri Tajiks have been arrested from Kabul & Panjshir. they have killed hundreds of civilians in suspicion of having links with the National Resistance Front #NRF. In a recently published report by @UNAMAnews it has been revealed ... 8️⃣ unama.unmissions.org/un-releases-re….
... #Taliban have killed hundreds of anti-Taliban and former government employees extrajudicially.

Another report by @hrw revealed that the #Taliban forces are detaining, beating, and killing innocent #Panjshiri civilians as collective punishment. 9️⃣
hrw.org/news/2022/06/1…
Few media outlets report these atrocities as the Taliban group has cracked down on media outlets. Since August last year, hundreds of media outlets (both print and electronic) have been shut down. Remaining media outlets are under the strict censorship of Taliban authorities. 🔟
For instance, women cannot appear on screen without a mask, any explicit criticism of the #Taliban’s leaders is strictly prohibited in the local press, & coverage of anti-Taliban resistance, such as the fighting in #Panjshir province, is not allowed.

11
wsj.com/articles/afgha…
Due to strict censorship of media, the int'l community is also unaware of the human rights abuses committed by #Taliban. As soon as Taliban captured Kabul the Taliban forces not only evicted people from their lands but also burn down their homes & properties. According to ...

12
... to @hrw, "in early October 2021, the Taliban and associated militias forcibly evicted hundreds of Hazara families from the southern Helmand province and the northern Balkh province and burned their homes.

These evictions followed earlier ...

13

... earlier evictions of the Tajiks and Uzbeks from Kunduz, Daikundi, Uruzgan, and Takhar provinces. Also, the lands of these non-Pashtun families were then redistributed to Pashtun tribes, the Taliban members, and Taliban supporters.

14
Taliban continues to force Tajiks to leave their ancestral land in the northern regions of AFG. Just in past few months alone, dozens of diff cases of forced eviction in the northern regions of AFG, especially Panjshir & Baghlan, have been reported.

15

gandhara.rferl.org/a/taliban-forc…
Common Afghanistan people have now no freedom of expression, and if an individual happens to be critical of the Taliban’s government, then he may face arbitrary detention, violence, and even death.

16

wsj.com/articles/talib…
While everyone is oppressed, the status of AFG women is the worst. They have no right to education & work, & if a woman wants to visit a local market, then a blood relative (mahram) must accompany her. In addition, there is a strict dress code for women that they must follow.

17
According to @amnesty, “the Taliban have violated women's and girls' rights to education, work, and free movement; detained women and contributed to a surge in the rates of child, early and forced marriage in Afghanistan.”

18

amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
Acc to another report by @amnesty titled ‘Afghanistan: Death in slow motion: Women & girls under Taliban rule’, “women who peacefully protested agst Taliban oppressive rules have been threatened, arrested, detained, tortured, & forcibly disappeared.”

19
amnesty.org/en/documents/a…
— Back To Terror:
Not only Taliban are violating the basic human rights of Afghanistan people but also their terror is magnifying with time. In 2001, the Taliban regime was dislodged on the pretext of being a threat to global security. But after nearly 2 decades, they are ...

20
... once again becoming a big threat to world peace. Taliban have forged cordial relations with various regional & global terrorist org. A recent UN report revealed that terrorist groups enjoy greater freedom in AFG than at any time in recent history.

21
apnews.com/article/islami…
According to another UN report, Al-Qaeda is again finding a safe haven in AFG under the #Taliban.

22

timesofisrael.com/al-qaida-again…
Shortly after this report, on July 30, 2022, Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda was killed by US drones, in a guest house belonging to Sirajuddin Haqqani, in center of Kabul.
For most of those who closely follow the situation in #Afghanistan, this was not a news.

23
During the past year, there have been several reports of the presence of high-ranking members of Al-Qaeda & other international terrorists in Kabul & other parts of Afghanistan. For instance, according to reports, Abdul Haq al Turkistani, the head ...

24
longwarjournal.org/archives/2022/…
... Al Qaeda and Taliban-linked Turkistan Islamic Party, celebrated the last Eid al-Fitr holidays in Afghanistan.

Similarly, after the Taliban takeover of Kabul, Dr. Amin al Haq, the former head of bin Laden’s Black Guard returned hometown in AFG.

25
longwarjournal.org/archives/2021/…
Yet another report by @AFIntlBrk revealed that the "Tajikistan Taliban Movement (TTM)" emerged in northern AFG. Acc to the report, the TTM is recruiting Tajik citizens & seeking to overthrow the govt of Imam Ali Rahman, the president of Tajikistan.

26

afintl.com/202207226732
Likewise, the Interior Ministry of Kyrgyzstan has warned of the risk of a resurgence of the terrorist threat in Central Asia. Acc to them, terrorist groups are regrouping in AFG to launch new attacks in the region or to revival of Islamic Caliphate.

27
asianews.it/news-en/Kyrgyz…
Such news and facts indicate that the Taliban have forged cordial relations with the regional and global terror outfits. Due to the favorable environment in AFG, these regional and global terror outfits are becoming a potential threat to the region and the world at large.

28
According to various reports, the Taliban are either hosting leaders or fighters or helping directly or indirectly many terrorist organizations including Islamic State Khorasan Province, Al-Qaeda core, Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS),

29 voanews.com/a/how-afghanis…
Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP), The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), Khatiba Imam al-Bukhari (KIB), Islamic Jihad Group, Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement/Turkistan Islamic Party (ETIM), Lashkar-e-Islam, Hezb-e-Islami, Lashkar-e-Taiba, & several other splinter grps.

30
Due to these terror linkages, AFG under the Taliban has become a threat to regional and global security. TTP operates from AFG soil & launches deadly attacks on Pakistan installations. Similarly, Lashkar-e-Taiba is responsible for attacks in Indian Kashmir.

31
— Spiraling Economy:
AFG's economic deepened since the Taliban took control of the country , even though the #Taliban regime get millions of $ humanitarian aids in cash from Int'l community every week , they are still unable to revert the downward trajectory of AFG economy.

32
To put it simply, the Taliban are not capable of transforming their self from an insurgent grp into a governing body, to be able to manage affairs of a country with more than 35 million population When in June 2022, a powerful 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck southeast AFG ...

33
... that caused catastrophic damage & killed over 1,000 people, Taliban were unable to start rescue operations immediately. Also, the rescue operations proceeded at a snail's pace resulting in grter suffering for the earthquake victims despite monetary help frm Int'l comunty.

34
Similarly, last winter, millions were at the mercy of harsh environmental conditions, & Taliban were helpless to provide any relief to the homeless masses in the extreme winter. Govt servants have not been paid salaries for months & many govt institutions exist only n papers.

35
— Concluding the Taliban’s Rule:
Contrary to their claims, Taliban 2.0 proved deadlier than they were in the 1990s. Though they are struggling with handling economic & humanitarian crises of the country but they are far more efficient in brutally crushing opposing groups ...

36
... and curbing basic human rights in the name of religion. In addition, their one-year rule has also taught us that soon the region and world will witness a coalition of terror in this unfortunate country under the Taliban’s banner.

The End.

A resident of Dara, #Panjshir:
The #Taliban went door to door in Dara and said to all male residents that a meeting is to be held in the mosque with Taliban security officials to discuss how to protect civilians life in ongoing war with #NRF, therefore, everyone...

We sat there for a while, after some moments, a Talib came & said the meeting (jalsa) is going to be held in a garden & we are taking you all there. At that time, we all believed that they would either kill us or imprison us, cos they had done so many times in past 9 months.

Last night, the Taliban killed at least seven civilians in Abdullah Khil Valley of #Panjshir.

After a heavy defeat & many casualities, the #Taliban entered to Abdullah Khil Valley last night in coordination with the #NRF to transfer the dead bodies & wounded of their group members.

But after doing so, the Taliban opened fire on civilian homes as they were leaving... 2/4

the talks for allowing Taliban to get inside the valley were done with the mediation of #Taliban security chief for #Panjshir.

THREAD:
Five days ago, the #Taliban attacked the National Resistance Front (#NRF) positions in Hesarak #Panjshir, which was repulsed by the forces of the Hesarak base and the #Taliban were trapped. 1/4
During this time, on Thursday, 11 TBN were killed, 40 TBN were killed & wounded on Friday & 13 TBN killed on Saturday in Hesarak area of Rukha #Panjshir.
In last 2 days, #Taliban are trying to gather & transfer some bodies & woundeds left on area through Abdullah khil Pass. 2/4
Due to the cutting of the Hesarak Bridge by the resistance forces, the #Taliban are forced to move their bodies & woundeds through the Abdullah Khil Pass, which has become a very problematic route for the #Taliban. 3/4

A memory from Taliban suicide attack.
I slept until 9 in the morning on school holidays when I was a kid. I remember when I was 9, on one of the holidays morning, at 8:45, I woke up to a terrible sound. I got up with a scream and threw myself into my mother's arms...

... which was above my head. The windows of the house were all smashed by the intensity of the wave of the suicide bomb, and the house was filled with glass. It had been a few minutes since the sounds of ambulances were heard from all sides.
2/10
My mother did not allow us to leave the house until hours later, she was afraid that another suicide attack would take place or that we would be spiritually hurt by seeing any heartbreaking scenes. When I saw she is busy with houseworks, I secretly went out with my cousin.
