1/9 One thing #SKpoli hasn't talked much about is how the history of private Christian academies like Legacy Christian Academy (aka. Christian Centre Academy) are rooted in school de-segregation in the United States. Just Google "Segregation Academy." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segregati…
2/9 School de-segregation in the southern US spawned the private Christian school movement. Tuition was kept intentionally high to keep out people of colour & minorities. At LCA - the Sask Party subsidy equals $750K annually. #skpoli cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
3/9 A lot of articles have been written in the US about how private Christian academies are funded by sympathetic right-wing governments through "vouchers" - essentially a government cheque handed to parents to provide a subsidy for private school. #skpoli mic.com/articles/18939…
4/9 It's similar in #SKpoli, except the Sask Party government quietly changed the rules to send government funding *directly* to the private schools (ie. worse than a "school voucher" program). The voucher isn't a sufficient subsidy for poorer families to afford private school.
5/9 It amounts to giving a tax break to higher-income families who send their kids to private schools, creating a two-tiered system that pulls funding from public schools, leading to class-based (& racialized) segregation. The @ACLU has sued & won. #skpoli aclu.org/issues/racial-…
6/9 It is an interesting - but also deeply disturbing - history. Stories of student abuse and misuse of taxpayer dollars in the US private Christian school system are not hard to find. #skpoli slate.com/news-and-polit…
7/9 We have seen the unchecked rise of evangelical Christian Schools here in Sask supported by the @SaskParty government with tax dollars. @SafeSchoolsSask would be wise to learn more about "school choice" to better grasp machinations on the right. #skpoli baptistnews.com/article/racism…
8/9 While people can choose how their children are educated, and whether they attend a publicly-funded or privately-funded one. We should look carefully at "school vouchers" and "school choice" in the US as a cautionary example. #skpoli americanprogress.org/article/racist…
9/9 When public money is used for private education, it becomes everyone's right to know how that money is being used. When tax $$s fund abuse, brainwashing, and social isolation for students - taxpayers *must* demand accountability. #skpoli @cancivlib cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
It's not hard to find other examples of Christian schools in Canada where a #LegacyOfAbuse was the norm. #skpoli
In the United States too, Christian Academies are frequently hotbeds of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. #skpoli thedailybeast.com/rapes-daily-be…
People in Saskatchewan are right to view these schools with extreme suspicion. This story and policy regime seems all too familiar to @CateSask and her peers' story. #skpoli nbcnews.com/news/us-news/l…
