becoming president of the AHA does not automatically bring a deep knowledge of the history of the historical profession in the US. nor does reading That Noble Dream. to offer a narrative of historians' "influence" in American life is to attempt to do #USIH.
it's fine for historians trained in other fields/periods to broaden their research interests. an early modern Africanist narrating historians' (supposed) former v. current place in American society is actually attempting to do American cultural/intellectual history. #USIH
again, this is fine...if you are aware that this is what you are doing and have done your homework. but simply being an historian in America today doesn't automatically make you knowledgeable about the history of the profession's place in American public life. #USIH
lots of historians in lots of subfields are appalled by the AHA piece. but none so much as Americanists, and for good reason: the essay is not just a bad take on historical thinking in general, but it is quite specifically bad American cultural/intellectual history. #USIH

never forget that a few years back some project veritas style sting tried to pull a gotcha by asking historians about Ranke, several of us recognized and flagged the op for what it was, and John Fea mocked us because he apparently can't close read contemporary texts for shit
John Fea has also mocked and belittled scholars for concern about the erosion of tenure. easy for him to do: as long as he's willing to set aside free inquiry to pander to the hateful prejudices abd policies of his little gig at Bible Thumper College, he'll always have a job.
If you think I was angry before...
Award-winning historian @drphillips2001 has been fired by @collincollege for speaking up on COVID safety, confederate monuments, and...protecting First Amendment rights of profs. (shared with permission) #twitterstorians#highered#journalists
If you have a radio show, a TV show, a podcast, I am BEGGING you -- please cover this story. Less than one week after accepting a judgment against them in MY lawsuit over first amendment rights, @collincollege fired a beloved professor for exercising his First Amendment rights.
it seems to me that @collincollege leadership is part of a criminal enterprise. Professors' public critiques have raised the possibility of scrutiny, and the college is obviously trying to chill the speech of faculty lest malfeasance and/or misdeeds be fully exposed.
