America’s relationship with work is unhealthy and unsustainable.
We work long hours and report some of the highest levels of job stress in the world.
We spend more on #healthcare than any other nation, but our employees are sicker than those in other high-income nations.
🧵

Work is taking a toll on our #MetabolicHealth.

And not only is this bad for our longevity — it's bad for business too.

Poor health is associated with more than $575 billion in lost potential, and 1.5 billion days of missed productivity for US businesses.
3/
Science shows a clear link between job stress and #MetabolicSyndrome, which may include:

1️⃣ Increased weight gain
2️⃣ High blood sugar
3️⃣ Hypertension
4️⃣ Heightened cholesterol
5️⃣ Abnormal triglycerides
4/
It's not possible to force health improvements onto anyone. But when you foster a metabolically friendly environment, employees will be more likely to embrace heart healthy practices

Here are some practical #HealthPromotion tips for in-house and remote employees.
5/
Sign up for #CorporateWellness retreats that focus on healthy de-stressing, gentle activity, and relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation.

These support better metabolic health in the long run, and provide employees with a much-needed break as well.
6/
You can promote #HeartHealthyHabits just by walking the talk.

If you're an employee, encourage coworkers to make one heart-healthy change per week.

If you're an employer, support the adoption of healthy habits with walking meetings, stretch breaks, and mental health PTO.
7/
Create a supportive #HealthCommunity, such as:

A weekly newsletter with health tips.

Or an online forum where workers can connect.

In either case, use your wellness community to encourage company-wide 5Ks, weekend hikes, or healthy group potlucks.
8/
A subsidized gym membership, mindfulness app, or personal training stipend is a wonderful way to show employees you care.

Be sure that your employees are aware of these benefits.

If possible, make it easy for them to use their #WellnessStipends both quickly and conveniently.
9/
It will be critical to start with the core of poor metabolic health: a lack of #cardiovasculartraining.
This means providing employees with information related to heart-healthy exercises, and if possible, on-site facilities or equipment.
For SMBs, stipends can be helpful here.

So you’re interested in #metabolic health and can see the benefits of making a change, but you're not sure where to begin your journey.

I suggest a two-step approach: researching for general awareness, then seeking certified coaching.
🧵
2/ The most basic definition of #metabolichealth is the creation and management of energy. But only 12% of Americans fall into that category. 88% are metabolically unhealthy.

Planning and direction are critical to future success, which is where
3/ Metabolic coaches work in an industry related to #healthcare, and have spent years refining their approach to wellness.

Since coaching can be accomplished virtually, it's efficient and convenient for those who are unable to travel or don't have time to visit in-person.

Many of us have sacrificed our health in the name of work. But continued sacrifices negatively affect our health and wellness.
When you consider the $225 billion price tag for illness in the workplace, it's obvious that employee health must be a priority – for everyone's sake
To encourage the metabolic health of your employees, start with the basics:

1️⃣ Offer healthier food options
2️⃣ Encourage physical activity
3️⃣ Promote mental health
4️⃣ Offering comprehensive #wellnesscounselling
2/
One of the best and most efficient ways to improve employee health is with metabolic health coaching.

Implemented correctly, cardiovascular #healthcoaches save thousands of dollars, hours of productivity, and the lives of your priceless employees.

Poor metabolic health has serious consequences on the heart. It may increase existing risks for stroke, increase pressure in veins and arteries, and prevent the body from managing energy effectively.
This is accomplished by:

•Controlling blood pressure, which may put unnecessary strain on the vessels and arteries.
•Managing weight, which may contribute to heart disease and its recurring factors.
•Reducing risks for diabetes, stroke, and heart attack.
Above all, metabolic health is key to promoting lifelong disease prevention. Restoring a healthy balance is key for limiting risk factors and putting you at the controls of your personal wellness.

More Dogma being challenged.

During my training and for my entire career it has been “fact” that cardiac rehab should not be started for 6 weeks after sternotomy

Early Initiation of Poststernotomy Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Training ja.ma/3xWfP0O

1/
It was once “fact” that patients needed strict bed rest for weeks after heart attacks.

Doctors that challenged that were ridiculed and called quacks.

We now know that practice killed patients and worsened outcomes

2/
A good physician should constantly be asking themselves what “facts” might be incorrect.

Science is rarely definitively settled.

I was attacked by an OB/GYN today for pointing out the financial incentives in health care.

Let's look at C-Section rates.

US: 31%
Canada: 29%
Northern Europe: 26%

What's the $ impact for our hospitals as a result of that 5% higher C-Section rate here?
I'm not saying OB/GYNs are responsible for increased C-Section rates in the US.

I'm saying that our system rewards interventions and disincentivizes preventative care.

Most babies are born in hospitals.

Most moms are exposed to this incentive structure.
To pretend that zero incentive structure exists in our medical system is naive.

To attack those few of us medical professionals who are willing to point it out is obscene.
