(1/9) Today, my fellow Nobel laureate #dmitrymuratov and I are proud to launch an action plan to tackle the information crisis unleashed by Big Tech & rebuild independent journalism. Here’s why:
(2/9) The huge potential of technology to advance our societies has been hijacked by #BigTech and a business model that deliberately promotes hate & hate & lies for profit.
(3/9) This is an existential threat to democracy & peace. For facts to stand a chance, we must end the amplification of disinformation by tech platforms and invest in journalism as the antidote to tyranny.
(4/9) The invisible ‘editors’ of today’s information ecosystem are the opaque algorithms that tech companies use to track and target us. They deliberately amplify misogyny, racism, hate, junk science & disinformation to maximize “engagement”.
(5/9) Radical action is needed to detoxify the dominant online platforms and reclaim a democratic vision of the internet for the 21st century.
(6/9) Endorsed by 10 other Nobel laureates & 80 experts & civil society groups the plan calls for an end to the surveillance-for-profit business model.
(7/9) We urge #BigTech to end tech discrimination and treat people everywhere equally through rigorous human rights risk assessments, transparency and accountability.
(8/9) The #EU has made a start, with the #DSA. It must now be bold and compel platforms to de-risk their design, detox their algorithms and give users real control.
