The Kremlin now sending overt signals that it wants to negotiate: The aim is to "freeze" the conflict with the present territorial gains for Russia, so that more territory can be taken once Russia regains military strength. Ukraine understands this, but will the West fall for it?
At the moment, it doesn't make sense to say Ukraine's "counter-offensive has failed."
The counter-offensive started weeks ago, with Ukrainian sources loudly announcing the coming operation in an effort to tempt Russian forces into west-bank Kherson.
That part of the operation has been a resounding success, which also caused the Russian offensive in the Donbas to stutter and practically grind to a halt.
The next phase was to reduce the Russians' resupply capacity by incapacitating the bridges across the Dnipro and Inhulets.
That stage is ongoing, but is showing success with the collapse of the road section of the Nova Kakhvka bridge, and the destruction of pontoon crossings at the Inhulets and near the Antonivskiy road bridge.
Concurrently, Ukraine started a ground operation, less than a week ago.

Mural wasn't there in April, so the artist must have already known of the Russian army massacres and atrocities at Irpin, Bucha, Hostomel, Borodyanka, Mariupol Drama theatre - or they didn't care, or didn't even know...
Geolocated from this image, BTW. The clue was the BP petrol station livery on the top left, and the fact that the area looks like a forecourt.
Ukrainian forces reported to have broken the Russian line of defense in #Kherson Oblast - no indication where, though, and no way to confirm. Lots of reports of Kherson city an oblast under Ukrainian artillery attack over the last day. #Ukraine seems to be stepping up pressure.

It's only /just/ inside Russia, so doesn't count, eh US?
Seen video from the attack on the Russian concentration camp holding Ukrainian POWs. Some of the Ukrainian prisoners looked emaciated, like prisoners from the Nazi camps. Horrible scenes. Who is responsible?
In my view, Ukraine is hardly likely to have been responsible for the attack - these were its own heroic defenders of Mariupol. Ukraine also has good intelligence on the location of Russian facilities in the occupied territories - as its precision artillery strikes have shown.
What would a Ukrainian "false flag" attack look like?
They'd shell a POW camp on their own territory holding captured enemy soldiers, and then blame it on the enemy.
That appears to me to be exactly what the Russians have just done - it's a false flag, yes, but a Russian one.
The Russian soldier's castration of a Ukrainian POW is symbolic of fascist Russia's genocidal agenda for Ukraine: Ukrainians as a distinct group are to be wiped out - by killing, assimilating, or sterilizing them. The agenda matches that of the Nazis.
Ukrainians are being killed by the war, with large numbers of their young men dying on the battlefield, which of course furthers fascist Russia’s genocidal aims. Women and children are also killed indiscriminately.
Ukrainian citizens are assimilated, either by imposing Russian citizenship on them, or deporting them to Russia. Nearly 2 million Ukrainians, one in 20 of the population, were estimated to have been deported to Russia as of July 21.
