I have just addressed the #UNSC and launched a proposal to create a Nuclear Safety and Security Protection Zone (NSSPZ) in #Zaporizhzhya. This is based on the findings from our mission to the power plant there, outlined in our new report. bit.ly/3RkPbao
From the very beginning of the conflict, we've monitored the nuclear safety and security situation of #Ukraine’s nuclear facilities. Through the @IAEAIEC, we've been in contact with Ukraine's Regulatory Inspectorate and have shared frequent updates online.
Through the Support & Assistance Mission to #Zaporizhzhya (ISAMZ), we've established a presence at the #ZNPP that will help to stabilise the situation. It'll also enable us to closely monitor the situation at the site, and to receive direct, fast and reliable information.
ISAMZ experts are carrying out detailed & continuous work to assess the physical damage to the plant’s facilities, determine the functionality of the main & back-up safety & security systems, evaluate the staff’s working conditions, & perform safeguards activities.
The staff at all of #Ukraine’s nuclear facilities have continued to show endurance and resilience in keeping the sites running in a safe and secure way amid the conflict, and the IAEA salute them.
We now have a concrete & detailed technical plan for safety & security assistance to #Ukraine’s nuclear facilities and activities. We have also continued to implement safeguards in Ukraine & have not found any indication that would give rise to a proliferation concern.
The current situation is untenable and the best action to ensure the safety and security of #Ukraine’s nuclear facilities and its people would be for this armed conflict to end now.
Till that happens, urgent interim measures are needed to prevent a nuclear accident caused by military means. This can be achieved by the immediate establishment of a protection zone. We are ready to start immediately the consultations leading to the establishment of a NSSPZ.

.@iaeaorg's been actively working in close & continuing contact with #Ukraine to ensure the safety & security of all nuclear installations during these dramatic and unique circumstances where major nuclear facilities are operating in an armed conflict zone.
There is an urgent need to conclude an agreed framework to preserve nuclear safety and security in #Ukraine by establishing a clear commitment to observe and respect the seven indispensable pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security.
I have expressed my readiness to immediately come to #Ukraine to conclude such an agreement, which would include substantial assistance and support measures, including on-site presence of @iaeaorg experts at facilities in Ukraine, and the delivery of vital safety equipment.
