CALIFORNIA: Final unsubsidized avg. 2023 #ACA rate changes: +5.6% (0.4 pts lower thanks to #InflationReductionAct):
acasignups.net/22/09/08/calif…
Ironically, the #IRA extending the #AmRescuePlan's enhanced #ACA subsidies will actually SAVE the federal government a bit of money in *reduced* ACA subsidies...because it's leading to slightly lower unsubsidized 2023 premiums.

AFAICT, it should save ~$61 million in CA alone.
Yesterday Connecticut also issued their final 2023 rates, specifically stating an avg. 0.7 pt reduction from the initial request specifically thanks to the #IRA passing. That's another ~$7M saved.

Nationally, assuming an avg. 0.5% reduction in unsubsidized 2023 premiums thanks to the #IRA extending the enhanced subsidies, I figure ACA premiums should be around $500 million lower for the year than they would be otherwise, most of which will be saved by the federal gov't.

Just had an amusing conversation with a very confused treasurer for an Alaska state House candidate who couldn't figure out why their candidate received donations of $1.79, $1.79 and $3.58 from people living in California, Washington and Connecticut.

I think candidates for local races (state House, County Commissioner, etc) set up ActBlue accounts for their campaign websites without understanding that ActBlue allows ANY U.S. citizen living ANYWHERE to donate to them...or to create a slate page including their campaign.
There's a few exceptions--recently I discovered that Illinois passed a law just this year which prohibits out-of-state donations to state judicial candidates. As a result I had to remove 2 Illinois state supreme court candidates from this page:

Dear Bloomfield Hills Schools residents:

See that "Moms for Liberty" shirt? Yeah, those are the Christofascists who've been screaming at school board meetings w/hateful bullshit about masks, vaccines, transgender kids & CRT.

Find out who they're supporting & vote accordingly.
To clarify: "Parental Rights" as used by "Moms for Liberty" is code for an far-right agenda...attacking "CRT" (which of course isn't taught in K-12 anyway) and "wokeness," attacking teaching sex education, and of course attacking COVID-19 mask mandates.

That's right: I just had my first radio interview for a NON-healthcare related subject.

Thanks for having me on the show; it was fun!

(and make sure to donate *directly* to some downballot Dems via AmericaBlueIn22.com!)
As I noted on the show, the whole reason I started this "slate donation page" project is because some people just prefer donating directly to specific candidates as opposed to donating to the DCCC, DSCC, DLCC etc.
It doesn't mean those orgs are doing a bad job; it's just that people like knowing that their particular donation went to help these particular candidates. ActBlue makes it absurdly easy to throw together a bunch of them onto one page so back in 2020 I figured what the hell.

Who’s more irritating?
—Those demanding 100% of ALL student debt be forgiven for EVERYONE no matter what & they won’t vote for Dems if it doesn’t happen
—Those saying NO debt should be forgiven for ANYONE and they won’t vote for Dems because some of it is being forgiven
As I've said before: I have no particular position on the issue. I happened to pay off my (small) loan decades ago, but I don't mind others receiving help on theirs. At the same time, threatening not to vote when democracy itself is literally on the line is unacceptable.
Yesterday's announcement seems to hit a pretty good sweet spot to me--it wipes out all/most debt for those who need it the most while also making important reforms going forward to help prevent things from getting so out of whack again in the future.
