1. #NIAID is launching its clinical trial of Jynneos, the Bavarian Nordic #monkeypox vaccine. I wrote about the fact that they were working on designing this clinical trial back in early August.
A short 🧵 statnews.com/2022/09/08/fen…
2. Since I wrote about the trial, things have changed. For starters, @US_FDA authorized use of Jynneos by intradermal administration, using 1/5th of a full dose of vaccine. So this trial is in part studying something that is already being done. Trial sites here. #monkeypox
3. The trial will compare safety, tolerability & immunogenicity (not efficacy) of 2 full doses, 2 one-fifth doses & interestingly, 2 one-tenth doses. Curious as to the rationale for such a low dose, especially given the preprint that came out last week. statnews.com/2022/09/02/stu…
4. The investigators think it will take about 15 months to complete the study, but say they could have preliminary results in early 2023. Watch this space! #monkeypox nih.gov/news-events/ne…

1. #ACIP is meeting today to decide on whether to recommend use of the the bivalent Covid vaccines. It was first posted as a 2-day meeting but they now expect it to be a 1-day meeting.
I will be live tweeting.
The meeting is being streamed here: video.ibm.com/channel/VWBXKB…
2. #ACIP chair Grace Lee noted that the committee didn't meet in August. She didn't say, but I think that might have been the first month since the fall of 2020 that ACIP hasn't met at least once in a month. These folks have worked so hard throughout the pandemic.
3. Lee is calling the roll call using her random approach (rather than going by alphabetic order). Hate this approach. Makes it hard to figure out if everyone is there.
Sounds like at least 1 member isn't currently on the call, Dr. Pablo Sanchez.
1. Short #monkeypox update:
Global cases this year have topped 50,000, with 101 countries reporting cases, @WHO data show. They report 16 deaths to date, but their tally doesn't include the death from Texas reported this week or the one from Mexico reported last week.
2. The reporting I saw on the #monkeypox death in Mexico suggested Mexico didn't consider it a death from MPX, but a death with MPX. Suspect most MPX deaths could be characterized that way.
Deaths have been reported from:
1 apiece: Brazil, Ecuador, Cuba, Belgium & India.
3. Two #monkeypox deaths apiece have been reported by Spain & CAR. Ghana has reported 3 deaths and Nigeria 4.
These data and a wealth of other information is found here: worldhealthorg.shinyapps.io/mpx_global/#1_…
1. A #monkeypox 🧵
Yesterday @CDCgov launched new MPX pages that actually contain a fair amount of data on the US outbreak — more than has been available till now. Starts here: cdc.gov/poxvirus/monke…
US cases now top 15,000, with reports from all states.
2. The @UKHSA is now updating #monkeypox cases only 1x/week, on Tuesdays. Their case count only increased by 145 over the past week, which is enviable. gov.uk/government/pub…
3. I took a look thru the #monkeypox data site @WHO is now maintaining. Internationally, the growth in new cases decreased last week in comparison to the week before. Deaths in 2022 are holding at 12. worldhealthorg.shinyapps.io/mpx_global/#2_…
1. So a new case of #Ebola has been confirmed at Beni, in NE DRC. Beni, as you'll remember, was the epicenter of the horribly protracted Ebola outbreak of 2018-2020, the 2nd most deadly on record.
A short 🧵.
2. Bad news first: The woman was in hospital for 23 days before she died & it appears she was not recognized as an #Ebola patient during that time. A specimen tested after her death on Aug. 15 revealed she had Ebola.
3. More bad news: She may not have had a safe burial. Her family collected her body for burial before the diagnosis of #Ebola was made.
So far 131 contacts have been identified, a mix of health workers & patients who were near her in hospital. Fortunately 59/60 HCWs were vaxed.
1. Belatedly getting to the new #monkeypox technical brief (#6) from @UKHSA. A 🧵.
HSA says the outbreak may be declining, though that may not be true in London, which is where most of the cases have been diagnosed.
2. The #monkeypox technical brief says there is no "robust" evidence that the virus is transmitting outside the networks of GBMSM in whom spread has mainly occurred.
3. That appears to be supported by the answers given by a portion of UK #monkeypox cases who filled in a detailed questionnaire. They are mainly still men who have sex with men and who have multiple partners.
1. There's a new #monkeypox technical brief out from @UKHSA. Always an interesting read.
A 🧵
HSA's modeling suggests the outbreak isn't expanding, though they acknowledge cases are certainly being missed and that makes it hard to accurately gauge things.
2. If I'm reading this correctly (not a given), @UKHSA's nowcasting suggests the #monkeypox outbreak has plateaued and maybe is declining?
Full report is here: gov.uk/government/pub…
3. @UKHSA is monitoring the proportion of cases in women as a way of trying to determine if #monkeypox transmission is moving beyond networks of gay, bisexual & men who have sex with men. To date there is no evidence of growth outside the GBMSM sexual networks in the UK.
