Excited to share our paper: „The rational for the treatment of long-covid symptoms- A cardiologist‘s view.“ We suggest a multidimensional approach targeting 3 major regulatory pathways involved in #LongCovid and #postvacsyndrom. /n frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
1. Target:The renin-angiotensin system (RAS): SARS-CoV-2 - ACE2 binding increases the inflammatory AT1R-Bradykinin/B1R axis, inducing RAS imbalance. Thus there is a rational to use AT1R Blocker (AT1RB), already discussed in our previous paper.. /n. hindawi.com/journals/jraas…
AT1RB can decrease inflammatory and prothrombotic pathways. Since brain-RAS is involved in neuron excitatory activity, we discuss the rational for AT1RB on the brain.
2. Target: Statins. They show pleiotropic effects, they are involved not only in lipid lowering therapy, but also improve endothelial function and have immune modulating effects. /n
Statins have inhibitory effects/modulate: HMG-CoA reductase, IL-6, CCL5, TNFa, cholesterol rich lipid rafts (also serve SARS-CoV-2 for entry). They show good safety profils, are widely accessible and affordable. /n
3. Targeting diet: Intestinal viral persistence, irritable bowl syndrome and mast cell activation are likely to have clinical impact. Thus there is a rational for a histamin reduced diet and avoidance of already known or new food allergens. /n
In addition histamin receptor blocker should be considered. Conclusion: We think, that targeting just one single step won’t be sufficient and effective enough to treat such a complex syndrome like #LongCovid or #postvacsyndrom. The concept will be evaluated in a clinical trail
